You sound as if you are far from selfish and perhaps you should start thinking more about yourself for a change.
Hope you have a great holiday.
Have just managed to find the breadmaking recipe book (misplaced for the last two months) so made some bread rolls but not used to the gas oven in this place and my scales are hard to read so used too much flour and they turned out heavy but edible I hope.
Really impatient to get settled in new house and stores etc sorted out. The sellers seem to be in no hurry to get things done and I can't wait to be moved and batten down the hatches."This site is addictive!"

Sparrer there is a saying about being good to yourself, cos no one else will be and its so true. A 'trip of a lifetime' is the key phrase. O firmly believe of a chance comes your way - take it, life is too short to sit and regret things. A few years ago my Dh was asked if he would drive to Poland to help a speedway rider by delivering his bikes, all Johns friends were amazed that I immeadiately said 'GO'. There was no cost involved and it was a true experience. Now he cannot drive more than 50 miles at a time and is disabled, how bad would I have felt if I had found a reason for him not to go.

If you have soup I bet the rolls will go down really well.
sparrer be selfish for your own sake. No one else will be good to you as you are.
Now I see that some of you bake biscuits from scratch and I find it so admirable. How on earth do you manage to not eat them all at once shows how much discipline you all have. :T We buy Asda's basics because MPH would eat me out of house and home if it was all home baked. Then God looked over all he had made, and said, "I can see idiots from my house".

:bdaycake:Happy Birthday gailey, and welcome to all the lovely new 'lurkers' Don't be shy shove you ha'pennorth in, we all love to hear from new folk.
it's great that we are all trying to 'do our bit ' to keep afloat in these tough times. The amount of advise and recipes that you can get from this site is amazing and it's good that so much community spirit is still alive .I used to look at the discussion board quite a bit but the amount of negativity on there is very depressing .On here we are all trying to make the best of a bad job which is inspiring for some who maybe feeling that they are alone and broke and the only ones in that situation.
so welcome one and all and keep posting
Cheers JackieO xx:A0 -
Hi everyone just popping in as we are going out with friends later. Their teenage son and his girlfriend are babysitting later and our kids decided that the best babysitter they ever had was the one that played monopoly with them, so they've got the game out and started it to shape the new one into their direction.
School summer fayre today and for the first time they ran a 2nd hand school uniform stall. Brilliant idea, I both donated stuff that mine have otugrown and bought in a new size, 1 skirt, 1 trousers (both M & S) i cardi, 1 school logo'd jumper and 2 gingham summer dresses all in brilliant condition cost me all of £3. :money:0 -
I only tend to come out of lurkdom occasionally these days but have just spent the last 3 weeks reading the whole of the last thread during my lunchbreaks [I'm going to read the first one next]. I had a notebook by my side and have made so many jottings. I have already cut back in many ways since OH's redundancy in 2005 but there's always more ways to dodge as Nella Last would have called it.
The other thing that has struck me is that everyone is so supportive. I found the following today which I think sums up what I've repeatedly come across both on this one and the last one

Actually I have to disagree Mardatha. We live in a rented cottage in the middle of nowhere. We love where we live but not the fact that the landlord will spend zero on maintaing his property. Every room is damp (not just a little either), the sash windows are hanging on by a prayer and the list goes on. I have spent all of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 sending letters and phoning. I have lost my rag and got environmental health involved. I'm waiting for them to get in touch. I dread people coming round and seeing it like this.

what are your options re. withholding some rent until the repairs are complete? i once had a ceiling fall in and my landlady was not interested in repairing it, and i also had env health round to no effect. i then stopped paying the rent for 5 months before moving out and even this didn't bother her!0 -

I know what you mean JackieO. Has anyone been following the whole secretly poor/secretly rich saga on the discussions board? I had to stop because it all left a bad taste in my mouth. There are a lot of people more interested in wallowing in self-pity than in doing anything practical to help their situations, and an awful lot more that are always ready to make sweeping generalisations about others and congratulate themselves over their decisions, or worse over what mere mortals would consider luck or fate. It sent me scurrying back over here for cover, where we aren't bothered who you are or what you've got, so long as you're interested in saving a bit of jingleGrumpycupple wrote: »Now I see that some of you bake biscuits from scratch and I find it so admirable. Well... I've got to be honest, I've no idea if my bread keeps or not as we've never been in a position to investigate :rotfl: I tend to make biscuits and cakes in small batches and freeze them where possible, but I do give a fair few away to neighbours as well. For me, it's not all about money, it's also about knowing exactly what goes in to them. If I can't actually make them healthy, I can at least make them less unhealthy0
