Recovering info from old phones

Hi

I've put this in the techie forum aswell, as not sure where was best.

I read in the paper today that there is a way of recovering info, messages and numbers etc from a phones memory
Does anyone know what I need to do this and if it would work on a water damaged phone

You could try a data cable, but generally the phone has to be able to switch on to 'accept' the data transfer.

Most data cables will allow you to see SMS, phonebook, and any media on the handset.

Whatever your paper may have suggested, getting information off a mobile phone is not necessarily an easy task. It can be a serious problem for even the best equipped, see Police expert admits mobile phone forensics barrier. If the phone doesn’t turn on, and unless the information is extremely valuable, you should probably give up on it.

The phone turns on as far as says it's charging (or not,( when I plug it into computer via usb, but thats all
Can't do anything else with it
