Can I use my sky+ box without a subscription?

I had sky+ box when I lived in my old house with my husband. I now live in a new house, just me and the kids. We can't afford to get sky and have the monthly fees.
I don't miss the channels much (we have built in freeview) but I really miss being able to have everything recorded.
I was wondering, if there is anyway I can use the old sky+ box without subscribing to sky again? Or if there is a REALLY basic cheap package that would just give me the basics, but also meaning I can do recording?
We have a sat dish on the house, in fact there are 2. One is missing the actual reciever bit and the other is all there, but facing very slightly differently to all the neighbours. I have tried plugging it into that and it says no signal? I moved the dish so it looks like it is facing the right way but I am unsure how accurate it has to be?
Anyway, if anybody can help me, I would be very grateful. I still have the completle sky + box, remote and viewing card.

Right you can get FreeSat from sky though your box but to get it to record sky will charge you £10 a month for the privilege.
As for the dish it has to be fairly accurate after all your aiming at a satellite above the earth, But with time and patience you possibly could do this with your sky box0

If the other dish is oval and made from mesh it is probably aligned correctly, save the bother of aligning the other dish and just buy and install an LNB on the arm. Buy one with an adapter for Mk2 and 3 dish types.

You can record from Freesat using a PVR, I suggest the Humax Foxsat HDR.No free lunch, and no free laptop 0 0
