I am thinking about changing the diet of my 3 cats, they eat felix, whiskers, classic or tiger at the moment but have been looking at the threads on the better quality foods:A.
It is true or just a myth that feeding cats the better quality food, you dont have to feed them as much at each meal? So if i was to change them to science plan or purley will this also work out no more expensive than felix, whiskers ect. Also my eldest cat is rather overweight (as the neighbour feeds him to, grr:mad:) so i need something more appropriate for him.
Thanks

I have found that yes feeding more expensive foods keeps them fuller for longer and you end up spending less.
When they were having cheap biscuits and pouches they used to wake up at 5 in the morning wailing because they were hungry, but on high meat content dry food, they sometimes arent even bothered with breakfast at all! Occassionally they get cheaper food if i run out and i need something quick and the early morning crying starts again so i know its definitely the food keeping them happy!
Definitely more money saving than feeding wet pouches and cheap biscuits etc. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
Good dried foods tend to be highly concentrated so you don't need anywhere near as much...I'm not sure how much quality plays a part but wet food obviously contains a lot of moisture and gravy or jelly can bulk up foods without containing much nutrition.
The other thing with dried foods is the larger bags work out much more economical than smaller ones...sometimes double the bag size for only 50% price increase. Therefore start with a sample size then get the 5kg or 7kg sacks if possible.
Vets usually have free plastic measuring cups so you can can see roughly how much you are feeding. If your cat is overweight Hills Light or Purina Light could be a good choice. Hills also do a senior light for cats over 7.
If you buy at a discounted price Hills/Purina works out around 50p a day per cat (as you'll be feeding around 100g a day) so about the same as a tin of Whiskas. It won't attract flies and the bowls stay clean so much nicer in the summer.0 -
I definitely agree that better quality food lasts longer, and fills animals up for longer.
Our kitten was eating Whiskas adult biscuits when we got her (weird I know!) and she was a fanatical Whiskas meat eater. Whiskas however, and many other cat food brands are like the McDonalds of the cat food world. They're full of additives, and therefore your cat just wants more and more of them and never seems to be full.
We slowly weaned her onto Science Plan biscuits, by mixing in tiny portions of meat in with her biscuits. Unfortunately for us, she only eats Fish flavour foods- however Science Plan do Tuna flavour biscuits. She'll now eat just them alone, and only needs half the amount she was eating on Whiskas.
She is also much healthier overall, and it's less unplesant to empty her litter tray

Yes, the more meat content, the fuller the cat will feel, like if you eat a maccies, you're full for half an hour, have a proper meal and you're good for the night.
That said, Hills, purina etc are only marginally better than whiska's, felix etc and exceptionally over priced for what it is.
Purely is s good food, and they do both wet a dry, as dry only isn't good for cats.Sigless0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I went to pets at home and got some Hills science plan and some purely and also some better quality wet food....purely, hi life ect, as i also give a little wet food mixed with dry. I have given the cats the science plan so far with a little wet food and it went down very well with all 3 cats, My edest cat hasn't been sick on it either which he often is with other dry foods.
I posted a nice note through to my neighbour asking her not feed toffee again as he needs to lose weight, have just got to keep an eye on his weight and hope it goes down.

If your cat is being sick on dry foods then Purina Delicate is a good one to go for. A 50/50 mix of Delicate and Light can work well.0

Please consider swapping from hills to to purely dry. Less fillers, higher meat content and cheaper. The purely more meat is something like £6-7, half the price of hills, and it's 70% meat. Plus it's not full or crap like hills.Sigless0 -
Is there really that much rubbish in Hills
? I thought it was a good food after reading some threads on MSN so thought the change would have been 10 times better than what they were on:o.
Thanks rigs
