Mattress - which to buy

I agree with the comment that the more you read the more confusing it is ... but there seems to be a lot of expertise on this forum, so posting for the first time ... be gentle please!
I need a couple of double / small double beds and mattresses for a property I'm renting out. I don't want to get cheap rubbish so that the tenants complain and I have to replace soon, but I also am not looking to spend necessarily the same amount that I would on a mattress for myself - and I certainly am not too bothered about trying the exact mattress out (for whatever that's worth in any event). Needs to be comfortable but also durable.
So a couple of general points:
- I was thinking pocket sprung as a middle road between not open coil and not v expensive - is this correct?
- Having read the various posts here I have looked at and seen some on factory-beds-direct or mattress man. Either of these likely to be better or worse than others - or am I missing some? I'm all for avoiding big retailers and getting value rather than brand names.
- on mattress man I came across cage sprung. Where does this sit - better or less good than pocket sprung?
Any suggestions much appreciated!
Thanks:beer:
Mattress man sell mainly big brands, and aren't really all that cheap. If you want better quality for less money, then go for smaller independent manufacturers.
Cage sprung is the same as open coil sprung.0 -
Many thanks.
Is open coil sprung the same as coil sprung? And what am I looking for to know it's of good quality (I'd thought this was a contradiction in terms!)
Any chance you can suggest a manufacturer?
Meantime - completely hear what you say about avoiding the biggies, but how do these look: (Apparently, I'm not allowed to post with links - but mattressman, double, myers coil sprung 179 or healthopaedic pocket sprung 1000 185?)
Finally, I'd be going for a frame for the beds - does wood or metal matter for this kind of mattress?
Many thanks again:T0 -

Open coil sprung, and coil sprung are the same thing.
Although budget mattresses are usually open coil sprung, there are also some very good quality open coil sprung mattresses available. They don't give as good support as pocket springs, but it is often better to go for a top of the range open coil sprung mattress rather than a cheap and nasty pocket sprung one.
I can't recommend any manufacturers on MSE as it could be viewed as advertising. However you should stay away from big brands as many of them have lowered quality in recent years in order to cut production costs (this is one of the reasons for non turn mattresses, and cheap and nasty reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs).
You should make sure that you buy from a seller who gives a satisfaction guarantee.
Slatted beds aren't really suitable for pocket sprung only mattresses, as the springs all work independently, and will try to push down between the slats, which will damage the springs. However they is a way around this problem.0 -
Tim,
I was wondering - the satisfaction guarantee sounds great. it surely makes the seller focus more on the customer and their needs. but does it mean that if I'm buying a mattress that could potentially be a mattress someone else had bought and returned?
I'm just trying to get my head round why are the big sellers not doing it..0 -

No reputable dealer would sell a returned item as new. Some sell them as tried out and returned items either on their site, or on ebay at lower prices.0 -
Many thanks Tim, much appreciated.
What is the way round you mention for bedframes?
Despite reservations, does this mattress fit the bill you are describing (top of range coil sprung) - I can't post links but mattress man > Myers Sceptre 179 / Healthopaedic 185?
Many thanks!0 -

I wouldn't touch Myers as they are one of the companies who have lowered their quality. Also the in their admission the Sceptre is a low end mattress: http://myersmattresses.co.uk/myers-sceptre-mattress/
As for the Healthopaedic, they are middle to low end as far as quality goes. And I should think the one for £185 is an entry level one.0 -
Hi Tim,
I'd be interested to find out your opinion on the mattress below? A company called Relyon - "Luxury Memory Pocket Platinum 1475" Similar price to the Madrid and great reviews.
Thanks in advance.
