Mattress - which to buy

Hey guys,
I have decided to purchase a new double bed for me and my girlfriend; I have brought a leather bed frame which was a right bargain from Tesco direct. I am now looking for a mattress, at the moment I have a cheap open spring one and never thought it was uncomfortable until I went dreams and tried out a few beds!
I have been reading through a thread which explains that pocket sprung mattresses with a memory foam topper are the best but if you can not afford the pocket sprung and memory just pocket sprung is the next best alternative h**t://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=418816
I thought Dreams prices where a bit expensive so I decided to take a look on EBay and have found a pocket sprung mattress for £139 here is the link: h**p://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4FT6-DOUBLE-DELUXE-1000-POCKET-SPRING-MATTRESS-ONLY-/170512544035?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Beds_Mattresses&hash=item27b356f123
Does this look a good mattress? Is there a better mattress I could purchase within this price range?
Thanks advance for your help,
Daniel.

Thanks for your replys guys however when I tried out memory foam mattresses without the pocket sprung base I felt a bit uncomfortable.
How do the pocket sprung compare with foam, according to the thread mentioned in my first post if you can not afford both pocket sprung and memory foam just go for pocket sprung, would most of you agree?
Thanks,
Daniel0 -
If someone is selling a 4'6", 1000 pocket sprung mattress for £139, then it would most likely to be bankrupt stock, insurance write off, or seconds. Otherwise they woould be out of business (even if it was terrible quality).0

hi,
I think I've read all posts on mattresses on this forum and the more I read, the less I know (or at least it feels that way)..
I've found an independent seller (with the 100% satisfaction guarantee mentioned on the forum many times) who offers a 4'6", 1000 pocket sprung mattress with a 5cm V60 memory foam layer on one side and 1000gsm soft polyester wadding on the other (clearly a turnable one) for £235. that seems good value for money, right?0 -
Sorry to hijack thread, hope you don't mind but we are after similar things. Done lots of research (thanks Tim!) and seems like pocket sprung memory foam is the way to go.
1. How much should I be looking to pay for a double bed size? Don't want to risk ebay for example so will try online.
2. What kind of base do I need to get? Am I right in thinking slats don't work?
3. Is Calypso a good brand to get?
4. Can you get as good as or better mattresses as Calypso for cheaper?
I realise you can't give specific advise Tim but may be able to guide me with the questions above. Thanks in advance.0 -

Is this just for the mattress?
Are you after a two sided turnable mattress?
Would you want a climate control fabric?2. What kind of base do I need to get? Am I right in thinking slats don't work?
If you are going for non turn, then the slats shouldn't be more than 1" apart. If you are going for a mattress with memory foam on both sides, then you can go up to 3" gaps between the slats. Or any divan base should be fine.3. Is Calypso a good brand to get?
Calypso is the model, not the brand. And they aren't what they used to be. I can't go into details on here, but I would stay well clear.4. Can you get as good as or better mattresses as Calypso for cheaper?
It's easy to get far better. But they may cost a little more. There is a reason why they are cheaper.0 -

Sounds good, have you got a link please, I can not find it!
Many thanks,

I agree with the comment that the more you read the more confusing it is ... but there seems to be a lot of expertise on this forum, so posting for the first time ... be gentle please!
I need a couple of double / small double beds and mattresses for a property I'm renting out. I don't want to get cheap rubbish so that the tenants complain and I have to replace soon, but I also am not looking to spend necessarily the same amount that I would on a mattress for myself - and I certainly am not too bothered about trying the exact mattress out (for whatever that's worth in any event). Needs to be comfortable but also durable.
So a couple of general points:
- I was thinking pocket sprung as a middle road between not open coil and not v expensive - is this correct?
- Having read the various posts here I have looked at and seen some on factory-beds-direct or mattress man. Either of these likely to be better or worse than others - or am I missing some? I'm all for avoiding big retailers and getting value rather than brand names.
- on mattress man I came across cage sprung. Where does this sit - better or less good than pocket sprung?
Any suggestions much appreciated!
