improve my position on google

Hi,

Bear with me....I'm a bit clueless with all this tech stuff :)!
So I've recently set up a small business and have a website set up (well, it's a blog really but I've bought a domain name and directed the blog to that so it looks more professional!) - to help increase traffic, I was advised to set up as many links with other websites/directories as possible.
I had a call today asking how my listing on one of these directories was going. I told them that I hadn't received any customers from this directory. They then went on to say that they can help to get my site to position 1 or 2 on google using the most popular key search phrases.......after much discussion, they offered me 3 key phrases for £99 +VAT for the first month (increases after) and would guarantee that my site would be in spot 1 or 2 within 48 hours. The woman was a right talker and I couldn't get her off the phone! I told them I would think about it, and they're going to call me back tomorrow.
I would LOVE to be high up on google search, but don't feel I can spend this money on the business yet (speculate to accumalate - yeah I get this, but at the same time I don't want to be conned!). Is this a valid offer, or could I potentially get myself high on the search results without paying this money?

Like I said.......clueless, so be gentle!
Thanks in advance. SG

Who specifies the phrases? Given an obscure enough phrase it is very easy to get #1 in google but unless that is what people are searching for it won't bring any visitors.

http://www.google.com/trends is very good for checking how much a phrase gets used in comparison with alternative. If only two words are used there is sometimes a big difference depending on which way round they are too.

I'd be very sceptical indeed on the 2 day claim. Although if you check your site stats you will see that the googlebot is probably a frequent visitor I don't think that the re-indexing and ranking is going to happen quite that quickly.

Sorry but £99 per month for SEO... sounds like they're pulling your plonker to me.

A site properly optimised shouldn't need amending that often, once it's optimised it's up to the google spiders to do the rest.

BTW, don't let them fool you by showing your site as number 1 in Google. By typing in the domain name.... my website will ALWAYS be number 1 in google when you type the URL of the domain.

The key point is finding your website through keywords that people type into google (i.e why are clowns funny?) and not (whyareclownsfunny.co.uk) - I hope that makes sense!

  • thanks both! I think I'm going to say no then based on that! Should be fun trying to tell them that though - might have to ignore the phonecall altogether!!
  • They are correct in a sense that if other sites link into your site that will improve your ranking, however, only if they are relevant sites.

Anyway, what is your website, I'm happy to have a look and give some advice, I'm sure others here will do the same. There are many things you can do free of charge that will make a difference.

SEO can be done very very effectively for £99 a month, I run an seo company & have 1000+ companies on page #1 of google for very competitive phrases. It only costs time & effort & can be priced on the talent of the people who do the work.
The thing when looking at seo is to look at the company, they can vary in abilities.
However, what this company is probably proposing is google adwords. That is known as PPC (pay per click) this can be done effectively yourself.
As long as you dont need a lot of phrases.
SEO is probably more cost effective. I would be sceptical at people who guarantee timescales or positions on the page.
Hope it goes well & feel free to ask for any tips or advice

Even though you have offered advice, I must apologise but your signature gives me the impression your touting for business which is against forum rules. I will be reporting this post as spam and I'll let the forum mods decide.

Apologies if genuine but your a new user and you've only made a low post count but you're first post(s) was that you run an SEO company with your company details in your signature.

Enter your business in Google Places and that way, when they search for something in your area, you'll come in the top listings.

For example, putting in laptops driffield would come up with mine on the top 2.

Take a look on Google Business solutions page:

Get a few friends to make a Google query about your site, such as product, location etc, but to also make comment about your website in the body of the text. Do it for a couple of days and you'll go to the top eventually. I use it to complain about services so if you Google "Bank" and say "w w wbank.c om is rubbish." "w w wbank.c om can't provide the service"....and so on. A few people can get any site on the top page with less effort than £99.

Lol, I like that method, an automated query could be run in google for that so it appears as a search suggestion more often :)

Net66 (The Social Media People) was mentioned in this thread. My experience with Net66 (trading name also 'The Social Media People') would deter anyone. The company has even proven itself to be a cheat and a liar on another forum e-customer-satisfaction.com (search 'net66, then arlene).

The spokesperson for Net66, 'madgem', signed herself as 'Grace, Customer Service Director', and some 'customer' posts were posted from the same IP Address - even though Net66 is in Manchester and the customers were in York and Datmouth.
I spoke to the customers, and their comments further confirmed my suspicians - that Net66 is dodgy.

Much earlier I had received phone calls from The Social Media People using various aliases to threaten me. The caller was quite definite in identifying himself as a Director of Net66 (The Social Media People), but went on to tell premeditated lies in his attempts to silence my criticism.
The critical comments I make are supported with documentary and recorded evidence.

I am a website marketer and I find the best things you can do are usually free. If your not on LinkedIn Id go join. There are lots of articles coming up on there and SEO groups that suggest ways in which to improve your websites Google rank. Also is definitely takes time for you to increase your Google rank, especially for keywords with heavy competition.

I suggest Google 'SEO tips' or something like that. you'd be surprised how many articles there are out there regarding this and how many purely list low cost or free activities to increase your natural search rank.
