Loopy, thank you so much, that is just the kind of thing I was after.

For a beginner, would you suggest so many of each 'part' of the routine or a time? How long does that routine take you? I'm a 'little and often' fan, so I know I'd have to work hard to lose weight, but anything which gets me moving has got to be good!

On the topic of bouncing, I just thought I'd share this story with you:

My friend had a relative who lived with her children, a normal family in a normal house. One day, the police came knocking on the door to investigate allegations of immoral goings on. The neighbours had complained of lots of puffing and panting, rhythmic banging from the master bedroom, followed by squeals of "Ohhh".

The police related all this gravely, and weren't expecting the family's reaction, which was to fall about laughing, and for the mother of the family to turn deep red.

Apparently, the mother had wanted to lose weight, and taken to using the children's space hopper in the afternoons, hence the rhythmic thumping, and the panting. The "Ohhh"s happened when she fell off the hopper every now and again.

The spacehopper was thereafter quietly packed up and consigned to the loft.
  • Just a quick update on the new rebounder... honestly its like night and day to my old one.

The new one (Bellicon) has bungee ropes which make for a nice supported jump, just like a real trampoline really.

I did a little bit of moving around on the new one and then did a couple of big bounces. I found it painful on my back but very supportive. I then went to my old rebounder (£18 Argos) and did the same thing and actually yelped when I did a big bounce. The pain in my back took my breath for a second.

My new one was very expensive and I don't think the price will suit everyone but if its the only piece of equipment I buy then it will be worth it to me to get fit.

    I'm dying to use it!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all that Jennie, I will follow it for sure.

I thought my back was much better this morning but on about my third bounce the pain came back  so I've stopped again.

I only stretched my arms and legs, they are great! Apart from the pain in my back I have aching around my collarbone which i'm putting down to the lymph getting a workout for the first time in years. Also this morning the bottoms of my feet and ankles feel achey. The point i'm making is that something I enjoyed doing and caused me to not even to break into a sweat must be so powerful to have these side effects. Why isn't everyone doing rebounding?

I have read that the cheaper rebounders can be less effective and actually 'jar' your body about. I ordered a good quality one with my birthday money a few days ago so i'm hoping to try that out and see if there is a difference.... when my blumming back stops hurting!

So, yes I was silly and didn't realise just how much I was doing. But the other side to this story is that as I enjoyed myself and didn't feel like I was exercising, then I think i've found something I can stick with.

Rebounding is really personal taste! (you asked why everyone is not doing it) I prefer something I can keep doing with music in my ears (headphones) that I can do and train at to get better (eg running or using machines which tell me what level I am on) and that I can do with others (group exercise). I think you also need to own a rebounder- I'd love a proper trampolene- one of the massive ones! I think I'd get fairyl bored with a rebounder and think I'd need to spend a while on it to burn the same energy I do when running. Thats my reasons anyway!

RE: Stretching, you must try to do your back, sides, abs, neck..etc. Try youtube, here are some ideas for your back:
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=back+stretches&aq=f
    your abs:
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=abdominal+stretches&aq=f
    your oliques (sides):
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=oblique+stretches&aq=f
    upper body/neck:
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=neck+stretches&aq=f
and don't forget your quads and groin:
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=groin+stretches&aq=f

Yoga is another good option- it improved my flexibility anyway and teaches you to really listen to your body. You learn to feel for the stretch rather then just doing the movements and wait until your body has 'finished' the stretch your holding.

Another good stretch for your back is to stand up straight, both feet side by side and legs straight. Next curl your back as if you were trying to touch the floor, so your chest touches your thighs or is as close as you can get. But instead of touching the floor, wrap your arms around your knees (or wherever on your legs you can). Cross your arms so you make a complete bind with your legs. Next without letting go of your legs, try to pull your body away, but keep your arms tightly crossed and held on. You should feel a stretch across the back of your shoulders.

And another good tip is to massage your back afterwards, you do this by laying your back flat on the floor, then curling your knees into your chest and wrapping your arms around your knees and lifting your neck slightly. Then make circular movements with your back and hips on the floor, start off with smaller circles and work your way up to larger ones. A variation of that is to stay in that position (eg curled up) but rest your head on the floor too, just hold your knee caps move your knees in small circles either one at a time or both otgether. This can help relieve tension in your lower back.

    Well done with the progress!

I just wanted to add that I would recommend reading the Allen Carr Easyway stop smoking book too. I stopped smoking straight away with little cravings after attending a clinic in March 2009 and have never looked back. As you have managed to quit off your own back you obviously don't need that but what the book might help you considerably with is getting rid of the idea that smoking ever relieved stress. It doesn't, it never did, it's all in the mind.

Seriously, I honestly think it will help you get the smoking thing out of your mind for good.

Jennie thats really helpful, thank you so much.

I see, I understand your reasons now. Things like running are out of the question for me because I have a bad knee. I see your reasoning with the level thing, you sound competitive, I just give up and have no stamina. I dream of being competitive lol. Thats why im so pleased to find a sport I can enjoy.

One thing I get confused about is the talk of stretching. People say to 'feel' the stretch or just continue until the muscle finishes stretching. I have no idea what that means! When I stretch a muscle, I feel it stretching, but it doesn't change or finish. I just do it for ten seconds or so and then move onto another muscle.

I really appreciate those links. I'm serious about doing this, for the first time ever I want to feel different about my body.

Also, I don't know whether its because i'm focussing on my body more but my 'love handles' seem to have gone really soft. I can't explain it but the fat just feels softer and spongier. Maybe its just wishful thinking lol!

    Thanks again Jennie

SandC I actually have that book but have never read it. I know smoking isn't supposed to relieve stress but if I go outside now and sit in my smoking place and just gulp in fresh air, I feel nothing. I used to go out there and clear my head. I do miss smoking.. a lot and im jealous of people who light up, however I won't do it again. I can't.

With regards to the stretch thing, the reason you never feel it ending is that your not holding the pose for long enough! 10 seconds is way too short! I hold mine for 40 seconds plus, per pose, every pose or I ache like nothing else the next day. It not only helps with DOMS it increases my flexibility- something that natrually declines with age, only after 40 seconds then to I feel the stretch 'give'. Seriously, try it, one example hold a calf stretch (find a step, lean the heel of one foot over the step, the other flat on the step above, press down the heel on the lower step). Hold it for 30-40 seconds, it will 'give', you'll see what I mean.

Your stretching can take up to 20 minutes, (though can be just 5-10) this is fine, its your body, what you put into it is related to what you get out of it.

I don't consider running/the level thing competative at all- I don't have a clue what anyone else is doing- most of us have our towels over the machine status screen so no one knows anyway! Its not about competing with anyone other then yourself, seeing yourself improve, just the same as one day you will find yourself looking back and remembering the pain when you first stared and thinking how much you have improved- you compete with yourself if anyone. You can do anything you set your mind to, its not about ability, its about how much you want it.

Thank you again, i'll try that heel stretch on the stairs and i'll wait for a change in the stretch. I will be interesting as i've always seen stretch as something that doesn't really need to be done... up until now.

Well its a couple of days since I first posted and i'm fed up that the pain hasn't gone. I had to walk fast today as it started raining and the pain started up when I increased my pace. I've read on the web that it can take a few weeks to recover from it.

Unbelievably even children with their supple bodies often strain themselves on the trampoline.... I didn't have a chance with my aging, unfit body jumping around like a mad fool!

I did do a little bit of knee lifts etc last night to keep me interested. If I get bored it will probably be another ten years before I get the energy together to give it a go. I want to feel good!

    Hi Lavenderlady,

It'll help you if you no longer go to your smoking place when you want to relieve stress,as the main thing you associate with this place is having a fag.Go outside by all means but somewhere else to break the association and walk around if you usually sat down.Likewise,if you always have a fag with a coffee after your breakfast eaten in the kitchen, have your breakfast in the sitting room and have tea instead.

I don't know if I've explained it very well,it's in Allen Carr's book but I don't have a copy to refer to.It does get easier, honestly.

    Take care.
