Rebounder to get fit but its hurting big time!

Good morning all.

I am having a hell of a stressful time at the moment in my private life and I also stopped smoking five weeks ago. I havent exercised in years and had a bit of a scare last week after ending up in hospital with chest pains.

All this has made me look at my lifestyle and I decided a nice cheap option to work out at home would be a rebounder.

I bought it three days ago and have gone a bit crazy, ie I've gone on it about five times a day, jumping madly. This morning I went to have a bounce and my back and chest are killing me, I can't bounce at all! :(

I had chest x-rays and ecg's last week so I know I'm ok, I assume i've overdone it..... or is rebounding bad for you? I've read so much stuff on rebounding, saying its wonderful, however all the info is from sites who sell them

I really enjoy the trampolining exercise and it lifts my mood. Please can anyone tell me their experiences. I'm so hoping that I will be able to continue as its the only exercise I 'want' to do.

Thank you everyone.

  • i'd guess you've just overdone it lavendarlady, any new exercise always makes you hurt in places you didn't know you had, especially when you've thrown yourself into it.

It depends on the type of pain you're having though - if you're worried, maybe call your GP or even NHS24. Did you actually mention getting started exercising to the docs last week?

    xx
  • Thanks for that, I think it probably is just overdoing it. Trouble is i've never done exercise before and i'm 44 so I don't know what I should feel like.

My doctor sent me into hospital because I had chest pains and my blood pressure shot up. Whilst there I had the wake up call I needed. I had been craving smoking the whole five weeks i'd been stopped. But no longer, I wont smoke again. The nurse said that it can take up to a year to clear my chest from smoking, I thought symptoms would only last a week or so but talking with people I find a sore chest is quite common for months!

I mentioned to my doctor that I was going to start exercising after the scare and she said it was a good idea. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much... I even bounced away on the childrens trampoline in the garden. Today though I regret it, even walking fast hurts my upper back and chest area.

To be honest, rebounding and trampolining seem such gentle exercise that I didn't think I could over do them.

May I ask if you've ever done trampolining before, and if you were wearing a well fitting sports bra when trampolining?

No i've never done trampolining or rebounding before. I just wore a normal bra but i'm not big chested. I didn't feel I was overly bouncing in the breast area. I had never even considered this before but will wear a sports bra from now on.

The pain is more middle to top back, near the spine but not in the breasts at all.

I'm quite a fit young lad, but a few minutes bouncing on a trampoline can leave my whole body aching...I doubt a rebounder would be as severe, but as with any new exercise your body will ache until it's used to it...

Thats good to know. I'm sure it is just pain from using muscles that have been sleeping for a very long time. Its not an ache as such, more a sharp pain if I jump up. Its not there at rest though so its sure telling me something.

The sun's come out and I want to be out there rebounding.. however I know my back won't let me today, wow I never ever expected to 'want' to be fit.

Does anyone else use a rebounder?

The only other thing I can think of to suggest is gentle warm up exercises, to ease your body before rebounding sessions. You can practice them while waiting for your body heal.

Do you know any warm up moves? Just things like gently rotating your head in circles, three times left, three times right. Then rotate wrists likewise, then each foot at a time, circular hip gyrations, etc.

Firstly you should definitely get a sports bra even if you are not big.

Secondly you don't need to be jumping around like a lunatic on it! I used to have a rebounder and the book I had emphasised the fact that it was better to do proper exercise routines on it if you were wanting to lose weight or get fit. E.g. start jogging on it and then try to increase how long you can jog for or try to lift your legs higher or add in arm movements etc.
  • I work for Atlantic Trampolines and recently went to a formal trampoline class in Swansea to see what I should be doing on my new garden trampoline and was absolutely shattered after 15 minutes of jumping. Trampolining is very good of you but you should also start slowly as it works your body hard all over. Five minutes a day or less is advisable and build up from there to 15/20 minutes if you can. You are right that bouncing is good for you - NASA say so and they've done studies on it say it is the 'most effective form of exercise known to man' and use it for training their astronauts. It's also used for training in the navy, as well as for divers, wakeboarders, gymnasts and more. Are you sure your pain hasn't been caused by something else - or maybe you have pulled a muscle. If it doesn't calm down in a few days maybe you should see a doctor? If you look at our website's press pack on the safety pages you'll see lots of health information which might reassure you.
  • Catkitt, thank you I will look on youtube for good warm ups. I didn't bother with warm up but I did do some stretching afterwards. I thought as the movement was gentle on joints I would be ok..I should no better!

Hermia I have jumped around like a lunatic, doing hard lifting of arms and legs because I wasn't feeling tired enough(on rebounder, not trampoline) sports bra's from now on, thank you.

Loopylou I appreciate that, I will look on your website for hints and tips.

I even wonder if the pain could be the release of stress? I ended up in hospital because of stress and this pain is very similar except its more into my back.
