Carpet Fit - terrible job and price?

Got a bit of a tricky situation here that I'm fuming about - have spent months doing an attic conversion (did a lot of it myself) and finally got the the carpet laying stage yesterday. I know a guy that works at the carpet shop who offered to get me a good fitter but my father-in-law said a 'friend' of his would do it for us for mate's rates so I agreed.

Anyway, he fitted the carpet yesterday and IMO made a complete !!!! of it. As the carpet was slightly too narrow I'd said to make a join in the 1ft deep area of the bay - instead he in-stepped the entire carpet into a small recess on the other side of the room, meaning the join on the bay side is now about 2 ft outside the bay and runs the entire length of the room. Because of the way he's made the cuts he's also laid the joint strip in the grain running perpindicular to the rest of it and (please correct me if I'm wrong) but it looks terrible. Is this a professional finish?

Not only that but my mate at the carpet shop reckoned the fitting would be £1.80 a sq yard (I supplied grippers & underlay). It's an attic room so has a couple of cuts and a small landing (not carpetted stairs) but going by the sq yardage (6.5 x 4.5) I was thinking about £60. Unfortunately I wasn't in but got home to find he'd taken £160 off my girlfriend for the job!

Just before I get into this I'd like to confirm that A) that the price is ridiculous and B) that the finish is garbage. I'm also wondering if I can get another length of this and another fitter is it salvagable?

That's a poor join. Your photo's not great quality and the join really stands out. AFAIK the direction of the pile of the carpet should be the same accross the whole room so that joins etc don;t show.

Can you get a proper quote off the carpet shop, so they give you the total cost rather than the cost per sq yard? That would give you a better comparison. I know it's too late now, but you really should have dicused price with him before he started work.

Did you put your requirements about the join in writing or was it agreed over the phone.

I'm no carpet fitter but that looks poor to me.
We have a join in our hall carpet and it's probably visible now that the carpet is a few years old but when laid it was invisible. I mean you couldn't find it at all, even if you knew where to look.

As for price, i've had several carpets fitted. I remember the carpet in my old living room (16ft x 12ft) cost me about £50. Rectangular room with minimal cuts.
Current living room and l shaped hall. I can't remember the cost but it was somewhere around £100 I think. current living room is 15 x 12 and hall is about 6ft wide and about 10ft-12ft long on each side if the "L"

Going by your sizes, your room is around 20ft by 14ft and I assume rectangular in shape with a couple of window recesses. It's not an awkward shape and in my opinion £160 is an excessive price.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Invite your father in law to view the standard of workmanship and then invite him to speak to the so-called friend about coming back to put it right.

I paid £108 to the fitters from Carpet Right last month , but it was a thru lounge and one piece was 5 metres by 8 metres ( yes it was heavy :D )They also had to make a join, to add another 50 cms along one short wall . The join is very nearly invisible , even if you know where to look. Sofa sits on that wall .

So yes , you have overpaid.

Rubbish workmanship and well overpriced. I would be having a word with your father in law and getting him to sort it out for you....................and not at your expense.

We've just been quoted £320 to fit approx 110 sq m of carpets (fitting only - 4 rooms, hall, stairs and landing) if that helps. Have used the carpet company a few times and although they subcontract the fitting, its always been a very good job.

Thanks for the replies - really just needed affirmation on what I already thought to be the case!

The FIL is naturally taking us at our word and is likewise !!!!ed off - unfortunately he's on holiday atm but will be speaking to the guy when he gets back. In retrospect it was silly not to get a price but at the time it was almost like it would be silly to ask for a price because he was a friend and the FIL was sure he would do us a good turn.

We've got another 2 rooms to do (that the guy was supposed to be fitting next week - at additional cost) - the only way the situation could come close to being put right is if he was to do the other 2 for free but, to be frank, I don't want to let him near them.

    Lesson learned

Nothing that would constitute a satisfactory result - the FIL is back this weekend and will hopefully speak to the guy early next week. The FIL's said it's his responsibility and will pay for the fitting and repair which obviously works out ok for us but, obviously, we feel guilty about this and don't believe the crook of a fitter should have £160 of anyone's money! Will see after he'd spoken to him though.
