Hi
I am currently setting up a web site to sell childrens clothes. I need a system to collect payments, ie accept debit/credit cards.
I thinks the cheapest/easiest option is to use paypal or nochex for this purpose.
I have used paypal for ebay related purchases/sales and find it easy to use but wonder if buyers prefer one or the other or if anyone has an opinion on they would prefer as buyers that would be of help
many thanks

Hi Jim
As an ebay regular I must admit that I prefer Paypal - if someone wants payment via nochex only then I dont tend to bid.
Hope this is some help?0 -
is there any reason for this? nochex is cheaper by 0.8% for the seller to get hands on money, i know on ebay paypal is promoted heavily and is probably easier but if yoyu were faced with 2 web sites, one taking payment via nochex the other paypal would you choose one over the other?
thanks

I suppose it's just a case of familiarity - I'm used to paypal and how it works, whereas I've never used nochex.
Mind you, if I wanted to buy something from a website, rather than just a ebay seller, then I guess it probably wouldnt matter so much...
Sorry, not being much help here am I!!!0 -
I think Worldpay has been suggested as a good alternative in previous questions on this subject so looking back at old threads would be worthwhile.
For Paypal, does the buyer not have to have a paypal account? I don't, and would be put off buying from a site where I didn't have the protection of using my credit card.
I regularly find I'm making purchases through Worldpay and have not had a problem with it so far ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

I have been buying/selling (mostly selling) at eBay and also have a website (not with online shopping though!). I hate PayPal for its "chargeback" policy - have been bitten by it several times as well. I suppose that's the biggest flaw and I have stopped using it.
I prefer Nochex over PayPal from my experience. At the same time, I have seen buyer's put off because I don't accept PayPal.
I suggest https://www.remotebasket.com - they host the products on their website - you just have links on your website. The service is free (with their banners) and you can get rid of their banners by subscribing (costs about £10!).
I also think you should consider that even if your nochex account is "Xtra" enabled, any purchases made from your website over £100/- will require buyer to register with nochex.

The trouble with worldpay is it's awfully expensive to set up. For a new business to shell out over £300 just for the basic package is a lot of money. Plus of course they charge a % on each transaction.
We are currently using paypal. Customers do not need to have a paypal account although they will have to enter a password and are sent an email by paypal to set up an account. They do not have to set up an account in order to order from you - I hope that makes sense!!
I have noticed that most online stores these days require you to enter some kind of password.
Anyway, we don't know at the moment how many customers are put off by us using paypal.
When we have our new product ready to sell I think we will start to look around at other online payment companies and see what there is.
Could you not offer both paypal & nochex?

thanks for all of these replies
worldpay does seem rather expensive
am leaning towards nochex at the moment, but who knows that could all change
any other suggstions/comments welcomed
thanks

Hi Jim,
You may find this list from the dti helpful:

They also have lots of other info and advice on that site:

There is also an interesting discussion of Worldpay vs Paypal and others here:

Protx is another one to consider and I think HSBC have a similar service to Worldpay, although I am not sure how the costs compare.
And you may find this Payment Gateway Comparison useful too:

Finally, I can highly recommend the free weekly UK small business newsletter /ezine called 'business bricks':

Hope this helps!

HSBC have their own merchant credit card processing thing but we had a right do with them and in the end went elsewhere.
Firstly you have to have an account with them which of course is not free.
Then you go through all the phone calls to set up your merchant account (even the business advisor wasn't sure how to do this) When we were going through it we got all the details and cost and were assured that there would be nothing else to pay. We got this assurance because we had tried to go through other banks and always as we got to the bit where we sign the contract there was always something else to fork out for that we weren't expecting.
So we got the forms to sign and guess what? We apparently needed a security certificate thingy which was going to cost yet more money. Not alot of money but there was a principle involved here. We had asked specifically if there would be any other costs and were told no then low and behold there is.
We told HSBC what they could do with this idea and promptly closed the account.
As I said in a earlier post we do currently use paypal but it is far from ideal - also doesn't give you the ability to accept credit cards over the phone.
So over the next few months I think we will have to look at the robbing banks again and see what else is on offer.
