Internet/Email failure

Hi,

Since Friday last we can no longer get email or internet connection through our home computer (Windows XP) using Virgin Broadband with ethernet cable. Had checked with Virgin and they confirm it's something with our computer and the fact that I can access internet by connecting up my daughters laptop to the ethernet cable confirms this.

I've tried all my anti malware and spy bot programs to clear anything bad but nothing has come up so either we have simply overloaded the system with too many photos which we have been emailing out to various people or we have got something on the system that is stopping us from connecting? I have managed to copy over a recent HIJACKTHIS log and attach in case there is anything on it which is causing the problem:

A couple of things you could try using the Control Panel:

(1) Network Connections - Local Area Connection - What does it say the network's status is? If it says "Limited or No Connection", click the "Support" tab and then click "Repair".

(2) Windows Firewall - Try turning it off. Repeat step (1) to repair the network connection. Can you now access the web? Either way, turn the firewall back on. If it worked you should also go to the Advanced tab on the Windows Firewall's Control Panel and click Restore Defaults.

Thanks for the suggestions Geoff but have tried both and lots of other things (inc run IPCONFIG etc etc having to re register windows in the process via phone) but still the same. Email doesnt even go through the motions of checking our account/address, it just says unable to connect immediately.

I feel there must be something thats got into our system thats blocking the connection and just hope it can be seen on the log I've posted?

Hi, try this:

Right click my computer icon
Select properties
Select hardware
Device manager
Click the plus sign on network adapters

Is there a yellow explanation mark anywhere?

Thanks P!!!976, all clear it seems with Network adapters - no yellow exclaimation marks showing which presumably is a good sign though currently I don't have the pc connected to the Virgin modem - would that make any difference?

Hi, do you have the driver for the network adapter?
Sometimes there can be a problem with the driver
even without a yellow explanation mark.
Try uninstalling the network adapter driver and re-install it.
When windows wants the driver, just point it in the right direction, you may have to download a new driver off your daughters laptop internet and save it on a usb stick. Hope you get sorted.

Thanks again P!!!976, that certainly sounds worth a try, I think I've had to do that on a previous occasion in the not too distant past - I vaguely recall down loading updated drivers at the time.

Post the results of "ipconfig /all" here, it sounds very much like a network issue to me.

Also, from the command line type "ping 8.8.8.8" post the results here

Then type "ping www.google.co.uk" and post the results here.

You have done an ipconfig so hopefully you will know how to do this, if not, let me know

Sadly uploading and installing latest network driver did not work either. I'm going to download latest malwarebytes software and transfer over to the problem pc and see whether it comes up with anything new.

Bit strange that the ipconfig /all did not give you DNS servers....also, noticed that you have a static IP address, speaking of which, 192.168.0.1 is quite often the router address.

Do you know the IP address of your router? If so, can you ping it?
Can you ping 192.168.0.254?
From the command line, post the results of "route print"
Do you know the IP address of any other pc\laptops in the house? Can you ping those? (Firewall on these other machines will need to be temp disabled)

Sorry for all the questions, but does look like a network config issue on that machine. The PC that you are using, do an ipconfig/all from that machine and post that as well.
