Hi there,
This will probably be a really stupid series of questions and apologies if so.
ANyway, i've always rented before and shared with friends so don't know the answer, i'm hoping to complete on my first home a week on Friday.
I won't be moving in fully straightaway and will be staying at home till I've got bed and fridge/freezer delivered etc.,
I want to get the BT connection ordered asap and will want wi-fi, but don't necessarily want to stick with BT and am considering the full sky package (broadband or wifi, tv and phone calls). So how do I do this? Would I have to order the BT to be installed and only when that's done order the Sky package etc., I take it I shouldn't go with BT's broadband, and just refuse this. Will Sky set all that up when they come along?
Also, if anyone's got any strong recommendations either way this would be appreciated.
Thanks, it's all a bit confusing at the moment!

If you really want Sky no need to involve BT as Sky can arrange connection of a phone line.0

Even if BT say they need £130 for the line connection?
It doesn't seem possible to have Sky without an active BT lineTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Is there some reason you are being disrespectful to Ypaymore and accusing him of lying to you?
I'm moving into a flat which apparently has never had an active BT line, so I've been looking into whether there are alternative ways of getting broadband without paying the £130 fee (I don't want to use the phone line for calls). Sky is one of the options I looked at, and even though they say on one page:If you are currently a cable customer or don't have an active, BT-compatible phone line, you can use our postcode checker to check availability in your area.Based on the postcode you have entered there is a good indication# you are in a Sky Broadband network area, where Sky Broadband Everyday Lite & Unlimited are currently available. In order to join Sky Broadband you will need an active BT compatible phone line.0 -
I think Heinz was pulling your leg....Sky sometimes will arrange a new line to be installed and sometimes say get BT in first,
If you use BT to install the line they will quite rightly expect you to honour a minimum term contract or pay a penalty for moving before the end of the term....if Sky is who you want give em a call, if they will only takeover a BT line your choice is use BT and pay to leave them early, or stick with BT for the minimum term and then move to Sky....you can still have Sky TV and broadband on a BT line ( and calls for that matter) but they charge more than if you are on the Sky network, but then the Sky network isnt available everywhere0 -
Well to be honest, I don't really want Sky either - I'm happy with Freeview. All I want is a phone line so I can have broadband. I'm 8 months into a 12 month broadband contract with O2 which I've been happy with, but I never use the landline for calls. So to pay a £130 connection fee + ~£11 per month for line rental (plus £10 per month to O2) seems a lot of money, which is why I'm curious if Sky would allow me broadband without paying the £130 fee (although, yes, I know I'd have to be paying something per month for Sky services).
Anyway, I'm sorry to have hijacked this thread, I'll continue to do my research.0 -
Thanks for your help everyone. I think I'll go with sky for the phone and sky tv, but then have a think about broadband and whether to go with someone else for that. Hoping to get it ordered in the next day or so. Just wondered, the earliest installation date online with Sky for the BT line to be installed is 2nd August, would I be likely to get an earlier date if I go direct to BT?0

No, because BT Retail have exactly the same relationship with BT Openreach that Sky do-they're simply another customer.
Bear in mind that if Sky install your line on an LLU basis (depends if Sky are LLU on your exchange) then you will not be able to use any broadband supplier other than Sky.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Thanks for your reply. LLU? Is that Land Line Use?
So would I be best to get a BT line and order Sky to come in the day after it's installed on that basis so I've got more choice for my broadband? Or are Sky Broadband good enough that it's not the worst decision to go all in with them?
Sorry for all the questions, keen to get this sorted but also don't want to make a mistake.0 -
No, Local Loop Unbundled.
