Vent about Tesco

Why Oh Why do Tesco have non food items on the shelves that do not scan?? Too many times i have went to purchase an item only to be told at the till that they cannot sell it to me as its not scanning. I have been to customer services about this and they said they could not sell me the item because it wasnt on their computer records. Why have these products on the shelf then????

I know what you mean. I wanted to buy a greetings card at Tesco that actually had a 75p price sticker on it but because the till didn't recognise the barcode they wouldn't sell it to me.

With however many tens of thousands of lines Tesco stock it's inevitable that oversights will happen.

Maybe the people that put them on the shelves didnt scan them into the system properly? maybe they dont want you to have one..

It could be as easy as they have been put out by accident before they should have been. I bought a book once in Tesco over a week before it was released. :)

That's odd they did that; in my experience, they'll do a till override and put it through as a department sale, usually under the generic "grocery" at its price, so on your receipt it'll be:

    Pepsi £2.19
    Hovis 68p
    Grocery 75p
    NME magazine £1.65

    etc, etc
  • ^^ yup..thats what we would do too

Some stores have been told to stop using their department key as it messes with the stock levels as there is no record of what has been sold. The missing stock is then marked as a loss.

that's the sensible thing to do but every now and then you get a jobsworth who won't do it. it makes your blood boil!

Every item that is sold has to go through the same process before it is put on the shelf. It is usually down to the manufacturer changing a bar code, supplying the wrong item or the buyer being lax and from my experience in retail it is more often the latter.

I would go for the manufacturer changing the barcode as the the main error because usually if you go to the shelf there is a shelf edge label with the correct barcode on it. This happened with the Radio Times last week at my local Tesco, the publisher had changed the barcode but not told Tesco.
