Data Protection Act

Hi, I'm not sure if I'm in the right place for this but here goes anyway... WE are in the prcess of applying for a new mortgage and today we received the offer of the loan....not from the lender however, but from another one of their customers to whom the letter together with all our details was sent by mistake. The lady was good enough to send it on but I'm concerned that this was a serious breach of the data protection act. I phoned them tonight and they have admitted they are in the wrong and it is going to be dealt with. They are phoning me tomorrow. Anyone have any advise regarding this? Would I be eligible for compensation?

It was a human error, they put the wrong letter in the wrong envelope. What loss have you incurred as a result?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

Ok fair enough.... its a serious error though and info put into the wrong hands could have be a bit scary. As it is I just have to trust that it'll be ok. It shouldn't be allowed to happen. Should I just say/do nothing?0

By all means raise a complaint with the company so they can investigate how it happened and try to make sure it doesnt happen again but you are due no compo0 -

You've made a complaint to them, they have admitted the mistake, and are going to investigate. What more do you want? How will compensation change anything? You haven't lost anything so they can't grant compensation to restore you to the position you were in before, so no, you shouldn't get anything. Accept their apology and reasurance it won't happen again and move on.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
It's quite a serious breach of Data protection and probably also financial services regulations. You can't really claim compo unless you can show loss, but if you complain how upset you were, you will probably get something like £25 or a bunch of flowers from the lender as an apology.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

Or the company would get a fine/slap on the wrist from the ICO and the OP would get nothing? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
