Collecting new car (on finance) without paper part of driving licence

I'm due to collect my new (well, second hand) car tomorrow from the local Ford dealer. Paying for it with part exchange and the rest on 0% finance. I've been told I need to take both parts of driving licence, utility bill and my passport. But I don't recall which are required due to the finance and which are needed regardless of how I'm paying for it.

Problem is, I can't find the paper part of my licence anywhere! :( Haven't needed it in the five years since I passed my test so it's probably in that magic "safe place" :o

Why do they need it and could I get away with not having it? I do actually have a photocopy - found it attached to a letter I sent to my first insurance provider with my PassPlus certificate. Would that be any use to them?

Thanks to anyone who can help! :o

    Hi,

To me it's sounds like all that ID is for the finance agreement. The decision on whether it will be acceptable is really down to the finance company not the dealer. I would suggest a quick phone call to the dealer in the morning to explain your exact situation so they can check with the finance company (Ford Credit???). Without the correct ID ford credit will not pay the dealer so they should do all they can to help I would think.

The photocopy should not be acceptable as the rules usually state they have to see the original and check it's authenticity with a UV light, however depending on your relationship with the salesman and dealer they MAY be willing to take a flyer on your photocopy as the finance company will never know but they shouldn't do this but just might worth asking anyway.

Perhaps offer additional ID as well such as passport, bank statements, utility bills etc. After all surely it most be possible for someone without a licence to buy a car through the finance company for someone else! Therefore there must be a contigancy in place?

The seller of a car is legally obliged to insure that you have insurance and are qualified to drive before they let you drive off. This applies to private sales as well as trade sales and people have been done for it.

The paper part of your licence contains details of any endorsements or bans you may have wheras the photocard does not, therefore the photocard on it's own is not proof of your entitlement to drive.

Trade sellers usually keep a photocopy of your licence on file as proof that they have complied with this law, so they may be prepared to take your photocopy to file if it means not losing the sale. It would be them breaking the law not you if this happens.

On a slightly separate note- the licence isn't accepted as valid by police etc without the paper part- both have to be supplied, so would be a good idea to find it!

Might be a useful post but the first paragraph is such nonsense that I’d be very wary about relying on the rest.

Offence code on your licence is IN14 Causing or permitting driving without insurance against 3rd party risks.

Can't find the statute right now as IN14 is a postcode and which is screwing up the search results, as is the fact that many tickets related to other offences require a reply IN 14 days.

As I suspected, no supporting evidence.
