Two nuisance phone calls within hours!

Why answer these calls ?
Most people have displays on their phone. If I don't recognise the number, I either let it ring or lift phone up and drop it back into the base unit. IF it is a genuine call they will call back very soon.0 -
I let the answerphone take the call they just ring off as soon as it cuts in, if it is genuine they will start to leave a message and you can pick the handset up.0

If you have friends and relatives abroad, of course you cannot do this - because, as Heinz says, BT are wilfully suppressing CLI on calls from abroad.moonrakerz wrote: »Why answer these calls ?

With Sky line rental, the int'l numbers seem to show on the display. If my mother or my SIL calls I can even see their number which I was unable to with BT.If it's a caller calling with ads and what not it says OUT OF AREA and I don't even lift it up!0

I keep receiving these calls too. My suggestions for dealing with them ...
1. Tell them you're happy to speak to them but first you would like to speak to them about God and how glorious he is. Strangely, very few people seem to stay on the line.
2. Ask them to stay on the line so you can trace the location of the caller. Just tell them you need another ten seconds and they hang up pretty sharply if it's a scam.
3. Tell them that the police are currently recording details of all calls to your number due to an ongoing investigation into nuisance and threatening calls. Again, scammers tend to disappear sharply.0 -
Which takes us full circle back to the problem of identifying which overseas calls you want to answer and, whilst BT maintains its policy of not passing overseas CLIs to its customers, that's not possible.saver20088 wrote: »If you don't recognise the number, don't pick up especially if it's an overseas number.
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/36576695#Comment_36576695Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Not all of us have our entire lives in little Britain [do I mean little England?]. Some of us buy stuff from abroad and have friends and family abroad.saver20088 wrote: »If you don't recognise the number, don't pick up especially if it's an overseas number. If the call is from someone important, they will either leave a message or text you.
