Both were from bogus CLIs so most likely to be a computerised random dialler (more than likely overseas too).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

I sometimes get 2 or 3 calls a day from these overseas random diallers; I then don't get any for a week or so. Seems geuinely random!!0

I just received a call which showed as 34009054 on my caller display. It claimed to be from a computer support company who had noticed problems with my computer's "international routing". I very sarcastically said "really"? "I also know this is a scam" at which point he hung up. I wish I'd kept calm and played along for a bit to see what information he was trying to get out of me. No doubt credit card numbers would have come into it at some point. I'm not sure which country this phone code refers to.0

I've also had 9 or 10 calls show on my landline caller display 034009054 - yesterday and today.
Before I have time to say 'get lost' they cut off.
I wonder if it's the kind of scam that they expect vulnerable people to ring them back at an extortionate cost per minute !:grouphug: A smile, a 'please' and a 'thank you' cost nothing0 -
Over the last few days I have had three or four calls when the 'ring' has gone on after I lifted the receiver, then nothing, then the call is ended and I'm listening to the dialling tone.
I presume someone somewhere is using a computer dialling system which is going faster than the operators.
Can any of you tell me how much caller display costs (I thought it was only available from BT)?0 -
Craftyscholar :
CLI is available from most line operators. It is a freebie with TalkTalk and some others.
If you're with TalkTalk, and have been with them sometime from before it was freebie, you have to set it up in "My Account" on their web page.0 -
yeah i get them too around 5 -6 a day but just comes up international out of area on my phone it only rings about 3-4 times then hangs up apparently there is nothing we can do to stop it as its outwith the uk, dam scammers i got them last year as well and the guy actually told me to F%%k off because basically i told him i didnt want whatever it was he was gonna try and scam me with, he then called me every five mins for an hour of course i didnt answer any of them, also my daughter got them and she was terrified the guy threatened her saying he was gonna come to her house you can imagine the kind of abuse she got from him and she now keeps her phone unplugged unless she wants to use it, its shocking that people in the uk can be abused by the world of scammers on our phone lines and no one does anything about it.0

You need to think "Why are these people persistently ringing me, when I've told them I'm not interested?" They are not doing it for fun - there is a sinister purpose behind these calls.
They are after enough information from you to be able to scam you out of money or, even worse, steal your identity. They deliberately annoy you to get into conversation with you so that, inadvertently, you let slip the info, possibly over a number of calls.
They obviously have your phone number - they want your name and address - either one will usually get them the other.
Typical ploy - wind you up until you say Put me through to your supervisor - you get passed to the next operator in the line - "Supervisor here.... yes, of course I'll take you off our list of calls ... just confirm your name, so that I can authorise the removal .... thank you .... Is that Mr Smith at High St? .... Oh - Brown Lane ... OK thank you - I've removed your name from the list .... actually he does nothing and the calls continue....
The only way to deal with these people is to pick up the receiver, just say hello - when you know who it is, put the receiver down without saying anything. Silent prospects are no good to them and eventually the call frequency will diminish.
Don't ignore the calls if you have CLI - they'll assume you are out at work and will start ringing at really inconvenient times, like midnight.0 -
Had 2 calls from this number one on 16 September 2010, one 20 September 2010. Both times an Indian man told me I had a virus downloaded on my computer and he would tell me how to solve the problem. Said I did not believe him and in the first call he said he was from microsoft systems and had been informed by the internation routing department. I asked where he was and he said London and gave me the number 02033182692 and said he was calling from this number. I have caller display and know he called from 34009054. He said he was at postcode SE1 3HA. I said I did not believe him and he said he would put a supervisor on, a few minutes later an indian voice came on the phone, it was obvious it was the same man! I put the phone down. The call this morning told me the same thing, that I had downloaded a virus on my pc and he said he was from a computer company but I could not catch what he said. He was not a good English speaker. I said I knew it was a scam (having checked on google after the last call) and I had informed the police. He started to get abusive so I put the phone down. I will not answer again to a number I do not know.0

Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing we will have to endure until BT can be convinced to change their stupid policy of withholding international CLIs.
As you have found, they will present an obviously bogus CLI to their subscribers - but withhold all international CLIs on the nonsensical grounds that the caller may have wanted to withhold their number and they have no way of knowing whether they did or not!
