iphone display help please

i have a 16gb iphone 3gs - when i am on a call the display disapears. usually when i move the phone at the end of a call it appears again for me to end the call but sometimes it doesn't and i have to hope the other person ends the call........but if i call an automated line where i have to 'now press 1' etc an then i have to end the call it is a bit of a nightmare and i have to keep pressing the home and sleep buttons until something appears. also i was on a calll yesterday and needed to look at my calender while on the call but i couldn't get the display to appear. is there a setting i can change to make the display light up longer??? or am i doing something wrong?
please dont tell me it is my i phone cos i have had so many problems with orange over this iphone i can not be contacting them again over this because they are a nightmare to deal with.

Usually the disappearing and reappearing of the call screen is down to the sensors on the top left of the iPhones screen.

I never had any problems with my iPhone until 2 weeks ago when I installed the new OS4 software. Know my iPhone is practically useless.

i had similar issues while making calls at first i would get a call forwarding screen that i had to dismiss before it would actually make the call,i did notice some problems getting keypad up to enter options etc.
i have since reinstalled ios4 but as a new phone setup and then done back up of old settings,it all seems ok now apart from the battery draining faster with ios4.

try restoring in itunes and see how you go just make sure you backup first.

If it's a glitch, two methods to try to see if it flushes them out.

Reboot - Power off the iPhone. Hold down the Home button and the power on button at the same time and keep them pressed for 1 minute. This will reboot the iPhone. No data will be lost in this process.

Reset - Go to settings > to general > scroll down to "reset" > then "reset all settings". No data or media will be lost.

Worth a try.
