I agree that there is nothing specific in the homelessness legislation that means employment income or benefits is a factor in the allocation process.
But feedback from those applying for social housing and presenting themselves as homeless when they have an income suggests that the council tends to expect, and advise them, to find accommodation in the private sector.
Hopefully this council will fully discharge its obligations as a mystery shopping exercise undertaken by Crisis indicated that a majority of candidates presenting themselves as homeless were not handled in the way they should have. Some got no further than the receptionist and handed a leaflet. Others were asked for further information to be provided before the local council would accept their application when the local council were actually obliged to begin process it.0 -
I've lived with strangers for the first year in a shared house (I am on placement and needed somewhere to live). Met them once, they seemed OK.
Rent was £330. Deposit was 1 months rent, so £330.
We are now pretty good friends and we have a laugh in the evenings.
SpareRoom is a pretty useful website for house sharing.0 -
Perhaps the best thing to do right now is to do the emergency housing checker on Shelter http://england.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/downloads_and_tools/emergency_checker0

I'm just wondering what has happened in this family to bring about this situation. Slightly OT i know but nevertheless of interest?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Parental exclusion is one of the main reasons for homelessness in this country.0 -
Considering a history of depression & self harm then a young persons Foyer could be a good solution for her, as there are support workers & they will be able to advise her on careers, training & signpost to other agencies. There are though usually waiting lists.
Will you be able to go the Housing Advice interview with her, as she may not want to disclose her past problems but may nt mind someone else doing it on her behalf.
They are generally run by Housing Associations, or are in the West Country anyway.0 -

Also this might help http://www.foyer.net/find-a-foyer.asp
It's still a 'room' but you get a lot of support with jobs, training and just life in general. There is sometimes a long waiting list though.
I was kicked out by my mother when I was 16 so I have sympathy with the girl, but I don't think a council bedsit in a sink area will help, she needs support.
And I agree, the council does have a facility to lend money for deposits if you rent privately and would rather do this than have you sitting on their list for ages.
Putting her up isn't really an option if it causes you hardship and it sounds like you're overloaded already!
With regards room rentals, the £40-50 I quoted is what some of my friends are paying now, OK it's not in the best area but it's what they can afford and they're greatful to have it! And we're down near Brighton so not much further South you can go0 -

I don't remember a history or depression and self harm being mentioned but as the OP has seen fit to delete all her posts (how helpful!)
there's no way of checking.0
