Right then folks, this is not a moan, actually it is a thumbs up
My colleague had text me to say he had a text from O2 to reduce his data usage 'or else' , he was fuming, then I showed how to view his usage online, how much has he used so far?
11gb yes 11 gig
not bad for simplicity 20 :j

It seems the HTC phones constantly use data even with no apps running, but that is still a heck of an amount.

Bloody 'ell so is that where all my bandwidth has gone!

Running no apps? I think it you'll find the widgets on the homescreen are infact "Applications". I personally take them all off and use virtually no data at all.

Once text has been received does that mean, the next time he goes over the 200MB fair use limit (old tariffs), he'd be hit with charges?

He has no aopps running, it seems once the data port has opened, it remains open on his handset (could be faulty) as my other mate has the desire and he says he uses just over a 1gb per month.

I don't think having just a port open is the problem. You can't rack up usage without something pumping data in or out of it. So your friend must have something running. There are services/apps on Android OS that will run in the background which will use the net connection if its available. So your friend needs to turn off allow "Background Data" under the Accounts settings to stop these programs from connecting to the internet.

Woops, should have mentioned although the handset is a HTC brand, the model is a HD Touch 2, which runs windows mobile , he has done a search and it seems it is a quirk of the Touch 2 :o
But yes somethng on the phone is racking up data , and it does not seem like a visible app :(

Ah, sorry for assuming its Android. With the Windows OS, its pretty much the same thing. Its the widgets on the homescreen, or in this case the HTC TouchFlo interface. Unfortunately I don't have TouchFlo on any of my WinMob phones so I can't advise on it personally.

This is an extract for turning off data connection for TouchFlo from the HTC website.
In TouchFLO 3D™, go to Settings> Comm Manager and select Data Connection "OFF".

    Hope that helps.

Has he got it checking for new email every few seconds ?

Even if there's no mail to send or receive it still has to send the log on info every time it checks, that can mount up over a month!!

Good point. I used to have mine checking every 1 hour and only download the headers rather than the whole email. I normally don't receive emails that require immediate attention so that was fine, but if you're using it as a business phone then its probably unavoidable.
