Retention deals for Sim Only Vs 24 month Contract

Hi all,
This might seem like a daft question, but I'm thinking of changing from PAYG to contract, only at the back of my mind I wonder what the likelihood of getting a good retention deal at the end of a sim only deal (say after 12 months)...
Do you get any kind of leverage when it comes to upgrade/renewal or are all the best deals made when you've been tied into a longer contract such as a 24 month deal that seems to be the norm these days?
