We used straight from the can, two coats no watering down.
My original question was, now that we have made this mistake what is the best course of action to take? Do we need to strip it all off and start again? Or can we rescue the situation with some subsequent coats that are watered down?

i would leave it if it looks ok

who is this mate - he can't be a decorator , to me he sounds more of a comedian- and a poor one at that , he is just making that up - no paint maufacturer anywhere will give you this advice and they should know what their products require . thinned matt emulsion is all that new plaster requires -it will even tell you this on the side of the tin
gloss paint needs something to grip onto ie undercoat - wallpaper paste is not going to give you a decent key if any at all , do not be surprised if it starts peeling .
No the mate is not a decorator, when should i expect this peeling?, as the first wall to be done this way was 15 years ago, looks great, no flaking nothing!.smooth as a babys bum!!

Hi, just had our loft plastered. The plasterer said it would be OK to paint the plaster once it was dried to a pinky colour so we did this - BUT we just painted over it with normal ceiling paint....

I now gather this was wrong. What do we do now????

Plastering Base Coat is a con ! alot of people think you have to use it but you dont any paint is fine just needs 2 coats :j

2 coats ? that is why , if you need to ask a question about painting , ask a painter , and that is also why when i see builders etc "painting " it usually looks like the dogs dinner

right, glad i read this.. we're getting a room plastered and i was wondering what i needed to do to it. water down the paint, then eh? And does the same go for painting over a painted wall or can i just slap un-watered-down paint on that? (we've just moved in, i've no idea if the previous owner prepared her surface correctly before painting.)
