Roofguard Protective Coatings

Has anyone had any dealings with Roofguard Protective Coatings?

As far as I can make out it seems to be some kind of franchise business carrying out roof renovation work. The process appears to be a jetwashing of the roof followed by minor repairs to/replacement of roof tiles where necessary before a coloured protective coating is applied.

A few days ago my mother-in-law was given a quotation at the same time as her neighbour's roof was being treated. Despite her bungalow roof being in a good condition, with no visibly damaged tiles or repointing necessary, they quoted her a 'special' price of £8,250.00 and have pestered her by phone ever since.

Fortunately she was astute enough to realise that this kind of work at this price was unjustified but I am concerned that other elderly people might have been persuaded otherwise.

£8000.00 seems a hell of a lot of money to basically have a roof cleaned and painted over.

probably related in some way to aquashield or aquaguard.
there are plenty of warnings about these companies on MSE.

You could get a whole new roof for that and some spare change, I'll dread to think how much markup is on that

A bungalow near me had this done about 6 months ago.

It looks horrible. All the surrounding houses have dark brown/grey roof tiles, this one is now almost "day-glo" orange.
I noticed recently that the coating is starting to peel off the rounded surface on the ridge tiles.

    Stay away !

Roof tiles don't need any sort of protective coating. If I were your MIL, I would be informing Trading Standards.

99% of all roof coating companies in the UK are ex-aquashield staff that try and do it for themselves. There has been a 300% increase in coating co's and despite a world wide use of these products, (Yes, they are legitimate) there seems to be a trend in the UK to sell at very high prices, and then do a cr*p job, too fast and not to the manufacturers spec: I have seen hundreds of jobs where the coating peels as it was put on either too thin, only one coat, over wet pointing that had no add-mix or sealant. Jobs done in a day, in the cold. Recent reports from an insider, included a list of over 300 recalls and complaints from just one office. And this is from a company selling at the highest price in the country, offering there 'expert' service, coating in the rain, frost and on badly cleaned roofs. The recent upsurge in 'HEAT SAVING' or energy bill reduction is also misguided as the new Nano-technology systems are designed to keep heat OUT (ie reflecting heat away from the roof), great if you run an air conditioner 24-7, but of a very minor advantage for our climate. ONE THING REMAINS. Roof coating is a globally accepted system that is ALWAYS given bad press by anyone who makes money from re-roofing. IF (and thats the biggest IF you can imagine), it is done correctly by a company that has trained people who are getting paid to do the job the right way, and not just a square meter rate by anyone, then it should last for 10 years, should be an alternative-cosmetic treatment that can be done at the right money for the right reasons. Almost every website I visit on this subject states they have been coating roofs for years....rubbish. 5 years ago this system was almost unheard of. Search around, get more quotes and ask; Are you a self employed salesman, Are your fitters self employed, Is your company VAT registered, Are you a limited company, How long have you been trading under your current name, Who are your directors, do you mind if I check your accounts at companies house prior to signing anything. Can I see your public liability insurance. If any of these are not available....... chuck em out. Have a safe day.
  • Hello,

Just alerting everyone to what seems to be a new development in the sales pitches used to peddle roof treatments.

Has anyone heard of a company that calls itself The Energy Funding Trust claiming that funds are available for subsidising Aquashield style roof treatments? My elderly parents have recently been pestered with phone calls from such a company and I've advised them to steer well clear. I happened to take a call from them myself today and when I asked where the funds were coming from they refused to divulge this sensitive information as I am not the home-owner!( Oh purleeese... these folk do make me larf ... especially as I've never yet heard of a slate roof that needed waterproofing!!!) :rotfl:

    ???????

What is the basis of your 10 year assertion?

If it is done properly a new roof should be cheaper and last at least 50 years.
  • It's actually really bad to blast your roof tiles in this way and some of the workers don't know how to work on a roof without damaging it by cracking the tiles. Also, the tiles on your M-I-Ls roof are possibly still under manufacturers guarantee and having this procedure done would invalidate that guarantee.

£8600 is a ridiculous quote anyway. Glad your mother-in-law saw through these con artists.:)
