Repo Stinks

Viewed a repo flat about 6 weeks ago, looked fine, smelled fine. Went for another look the other day and it stank! Any ideas as to why this may be? The estate agent reckoned it could be to do with the drains or something because the water had been cut off for so long

It does sound like it could be the drains. If the water is standing still then it will stink. You just need to flush them out. Or there could be a shared drain with a blockage but no-one notices as the house is empty so no-one to smell the pong.
Or it could be something that was hidden before the previous occupiers were kicked out and has just reached its peak of ripeness. We went to see a house where they had hidden a fish in a fridge. Of course the power had been turned off by the bank. Apparently there was a bit of a pong when the EA to find the 2 week old fish in the fridge that had been turned off.
The other thing is that it could be a rat or something that has died under the floorboards or in the chimmley or walls. If you go back in a few weeks and its still there then your know there is a serious problem that needs looking at.0 -
The reason that there's a U-bend or trap behind your WC, and below every sink, bath, shower basin etc in the house is that the standing water in the trap or bend prevents gases from the drains entering the house.
Leave these long enough, and the water in the smaller traps will evaporate, leaving the house open to the drains, and vice versa.
Run the water for a while, fill all these traps and U-bends up, spray some air freshener around, and that'll solve it.
There may be other cause(s) of course, but that's the solution for this one.0 -
Our repo stinks too! But we have managed, 5 days later, to nearly get rid of it. Buy some drain and sink cleaner.First baby due 3/3/14 - Team Yellow! Our little girl born 25/2/140

Maybe the estate agent had a mammoth floater get wedged when he flushed?! :eek:0

It's been so hot that the water almost certainly will have evaporated.
But might be worth sniffing at the sinks and seeing if it's stronger there. You don't want to find out it's rot or something equally nasty.0 -
