Just missed a call on my mobile from a number beginning +98 which appears to be the international dialling code for Iran - !!!!!! ? - presumably some kind of scam.

  • Hi there

An international call would appear on your phone as "WITHHELD" or "UNKNOWN". This is clearly a scam. Someone has a UK line that they've managed to re-identify as an international number. If you were to call the number back, then you would be opening an international telephone line which would not close until both parties ended the call. You would be responsible for the cost of the call as you would have initiated it and your service provider could legitimately charge you the full amount.

DON'T CALL THE NUMBER - block it if you can.

Not sure about that, surely you'd be billed for the call you made, for the length of time. I receive calls from friends/family abroad and the number comes up on my mobile. It's be unknown when a dialer sysem is used, ie telemarketing.

While this is true on a landline, it was my understanding that mobiles can display international calleriD?

Even so it could still be someone spoofing their number
  • Do you have a friend/family member serving in either Iraq or Afghanistan who has used a mobile to call home? The Military serving in the two "war" zones are not allowed mobiles because calls are routed through Iran. The Iranians were suspected of monitoring calls getting numbers and then calling them.

No - I don't know anyone in the military or anyone in Iran. Called again this afternoon but rang off before I could pick up.
  • I have a few friends in Iran and when they call my mobile the number shows up. Its difficult for people over there to get connections to international numbers (especially the UK and US), most of my Persian friends there are Baha'is and for them to get access to an international line takes a lot of effort due to government persecution.

Hopefully its not some poor persecuted person trying to get hold of a relative or friend and they have a wrong number!

    Hi there

An international call would appear on your phone as "WITHHELD" or "UNKNOWN".

    This is completely untrue.

Mobile calls always have the caller's ID, including international, unless it is withheld by the caller or their network.
