Turning water back on in new house.

So I am buying a house. The water has been turned off at the stopcock and everything drained out. Its a reprossession. We have a plumber and gas engineer in place to come and check everything out and replace the boiler but due to the sale going faster than we thought it could be two weeks after we get the keys. He has pencilled us in for this date and it would be diffcult for him to change. Its not really a problem.
But.. we are going to paint the place and it would be useful to have the water turned back on. Would it be safe to turn it back on for a day and obviously check for any visible signs of leaks and then turn it back off at the end of the day? It would just help to have water when painting rather than taking down gallons of water in bottles.
Can anyone help or offer assistance on how to do it and what to look for? It would only be temporary for a day or two till the plumber came to do it properly.
Thanks in advance for anyones help. It would be much appericated.

    Part of the Furniture
Go round and check taps are turned off, especially pipes for washing machine/dishwasher etc.

Then turn on main stopcock and listen/look for water escaping!
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Do what keith says. I am not sure what the problem is. Just turn on the stopcock and check that there are no apparent leaks. A plumber will not do anything different.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
