Not that i have nor want one of these phones, but i have been reading about the signal issues due to the antenna, and apples reply that it was merely a software issue.
However after independent tests ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/07/12/consumer_reports_iphone_reversal/ ) showing that the IPhone antenna really is a design flaw would people be able to send their handsets back to the operator for refunds?
Under Sale of Goods act, if the IPhone has a design flaw it must be rectified for free in order for it to meet the standards of been fit for purpose.

Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Apple have now finally admitted that it is a hardware fault, their solution?
To change the software that shows the signal strength more accurately!!!!
At least now you will be able to see the signal drop off faster.
Bet you a fiver that when they fix this in the next version of the iphone the press and sheeple will rave about the fact that you hold it in your palm and make a phone call.
I agree that a phone that cannot maintain phone calls is not fit for purpose.
Advising customers to buy silicone jackets for the phone is not good enough.
It would be like Ford telling you to buy a tractor and tow rope if you want to drive up an incline
It is shameful that they blamed the customers initially- Why do the press let them get away with it?
Apple are slowly eroding the altruistic nature of open source and free software and people are paying them for the privilege.
Mind you, anyone stoopid enough to by an iphone now knowing about this fault doesn't deserve a refund...
Sorry about the rant but they are the only large technology firm that i actually hate- the others I merely distrust.0 -
i have a 3gs and find it a fantastic bit of kit for my needs (apart from ios4 update )but no way would i be upgrading to the iphone4 with a problem like this for apple to suggest a silicone skin is a joke, what if i do not want my phone wrapped in a condom is the next solution to use a handsfree permanently???0

Titter yea not.
A couple of years ago i had the HTC Athena which did not support non-hands free use. I loved it to bits but having to find the bluetooth head set was a pain.0 -
I have been given one from work to replace our old HTCs and only one person out of 27 has been able to replicate the fault.
Not sure if its a representative sample, but I get the feeling it might be blown out of all proportion.
My contract is up in October, and I would seriously consider getting one, its not a bad little bit of kit.0 -

The "expert" consensus seems to be that Apple should have coated the metal strip with a non conductive solution.
They messed up, plain and simple.
The components in an Iphone are the pretty much the same as other phones, even though they claim that they run on "magic", thus it is a design fault.
Even those users that don't have a total drop off might find that the battery life will be compromised by the weaker reception
Any given iphone might respond differently depending on the conductivity of the user's skin.
I have no idea how many people are affected but i would guess that it is more than the 3% in your work place. The sale of rubber cases is up by a lot more than 3%...
It has taken Apple 9 months to admit that "some" of their Time capsules are faulty. How much longer before they refund all of the other owners of dead units. Atleast they have partially admitted that there is a problem with the iphone in a shorter time frame.
If anything I think that the press have been very easy going on Apple, too easy.
The inch columns relative to ownership is nothing compared to the negative press that Microsoft's Xbox "ring of death" recieved.0
