My awful memory is a standing joke for my friends and collegues - especially the time I introduced my husband (of over 25 years) to someone as "and this is .. pause .. Mr Bennifred" because I couldn't remember his first name :o

I'm 50. Got the menopause to look forward to.......

You know how people say "Woo-hoo - the menopause - here I come! Can't wait!"

    No?

    There's a reason for that ........ :rotfl:

I once introduced my brother by the dog's name. Memory lapse or Freudian slip ?
    Who knows :rotfl:

As I've made more and more use of the net I've found I need to find more and more passwords & etc and my tip is: use a mixture of addresses such as the first house you lived in, and the names of long dead dogs associated with those addresses. Works for me :)
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

In our family it was quite common to call someone, or be called, by a pet's name.

    Hopefully everyone is like that?

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)

Depends on the dog I suppose!! :rotfl:

The problem with that is I can't remember which one I've associated with which thing i.e. I can remember the passwords I'm likely to have used but how do you remember which one you used for that particular account/website?

We use places for anything to do with travelling, pets for informal things like forums (fora?) and a parent's dates etc for financial stuff.

I would never just use mother's maiden name - everyone in Welsh towns and villages knows the family history!

  • All well and good, and humourous enough so far.

But there is a problem looming for some of us, which isn't funny at all.

My mother has had a poor memory for years, and now in her late 80's is in such a state that she can get upset, and not be able to remember why.

There are times I'm sure she doesn't even recognise me, but there still seems to be a mechanism for covering up lack of memory..

"How is everybody?" No names to get wrong or miss.

I could go on, but it is too upsetting.

    You're quite right novice-saver - it's a horrific situation - sorry your mum's going through it.

As social human beings we do seem to have a self-preservation button which kicks into place to save us possible embarrassment or appearing 'out of control' in front of other people and the strategies we'll come up with to ensure we seem 'normal' are amazing sometimes!

This must be so upsetting for you and your mum though.
