Broadband without a phone line

Hi there, not sure this is the right place to post this but anyway...
I am going into my second year at Uni and am looking to set up broadband in my new house, I'm sharing it with 6 other people.
I've found the broadband provider that I want but I was just wondering, is it possible to get broadband without paying the line rental on a BT (or other) landline as we aren't bothered about having a land line. Is paying that £11 a month or whatever it is a necessary cost to have broadband?
Thanks in advance

Hey,
I live in a house with 4 others, and we got broadband from NTL who came highly recomended. You don't need phone line and good value for money too. Order online to get another £10 off and go through Quidco for lots of lovely cash back. Then, get your wireless kit from PC World (see Grabbit board) for £34.99 which includes one adaptor as well.0 -
or do what we did with NTL - after about a week of being connected we phoned up, asked to cancel. They asked why and we said SKY was offering 16mbit broadband for £10/month in the end we got 10mbit for £10/month and £55 credited to the account supposedly so we could buy a wireless router. Give it a try0

The problem is that NTl/Telewest internet access requires that you are in a cabled area, if your not, you have no chance of getting NTL/Telewest; if your house hasnt already been connected for cable in the past, they are sometimes reluctant to connect houses for cost reasons.
Best bet is to give them a ring and askI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Thanks for the replies guys, I'm definately able to get NTL as that is what the previous tennants had. However comparing the cost of NTL (£35 a month for 12 months) with the cost of having a a landline plus a broadband (http://www.newnet.co.uk/broadband/home_info.php) so £11 a month + £21 a month (for 9 or 10 months) still works out cheaper due to the necessary 12 month contract at NTL and my need for max. speed broadband + large download limit.
I guess it could be worth signing up and then like you say haggling down the price quoting a diff. offer?0 -
Was a recent thread about "Now" wireless http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=255728 - think coverage is a bit limited at the moment though.0

i have just set up NTL
it costs £20 a month for broadband and digital tv for 12 months and £23.49 after that
it's less obviously if you only want the broadband0 -
Not quite answering what u asked for but, to avoid a year's contract give Bulldog a try?0

six month contract, plus you'd still need to pay for a phoneline. would just be a bulldog one instead of BTThe word is BOUGHT, not BROUGHT.
It's LOSE, NOT LOOSE.
You ask for ADVICE not ADVISE.0 -

Yea but the thing is that broadband isnt fast enough/doesnt have a large enough download limit. This is shared between 7 people so I want 8MB (ive been told that I can get at least a 6MB connection) and need 20 min but preferably a higher download limit. And I dont get the first 3 months for cheaper because I only want 9 or 10 month contract.0 -

Well no its fine I have a broadband provider where I dont have to sign up for 12 months, https://www.newnet.co.uk is done on a monthly period.0
