What do you mean by "what do I need to do for tax purposes"? She won't pay tax if her income is less than £6475 PA.

  • Is she only working in school holidays? If so she may need a P38(S) exempting her from paying tax (example here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p38s.pdf but you have to get the form from your local tax office).

She needs to check her tax code - if it's BR, she's paying basic rate tax and doesn't have a personal allowance.

Isn't £4 an hour below the minimum wage?

Apparently not, but it is still rubbish barely covers the cost of a coffee these days

Not for a 16 year old - according to this http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/TheNationalMinimumWage/DG_10027201 £3.57 is the minimum wage for 16-17 year olds.

  • My son has just left school and is working for Costa Coffee until he starts University in October. He gets paid £5.80 per hour and has been paying tax through PAYE. I phoned the tax office (yours is probably the same one, Centre 1 East Kilbride - 0845 070 3703). They said that since he has already started working and is paying tax then he should phone his employer for a P46 and then once signed and returned, Costa would stop taking tax and repay that already paid. They said that a P38(S) should be completed by students before starting employment. The tax office were very helpful on the phone.

However, if she is just getting paid 'cash in hand' then I would tend to do nothing!
