Hi all, I would like to get a smartphone. Never had one before, so i'm not very sure which one i should get. Any opinions?

HTC Desire: sounds like a good phone, cheaper than iphone
HTC Wildlife: A lot cheaper but lower technology/slower
iPhone4: Latest, some software probs, pricy
iPhone3gs: sounds perfect but old now....

Any help?

Any smartphone is a learning curve, your 1st summary seems the ideal one, 2nd choice should not matter if you have never had a smartphone, the processor in the Wildfire is still plenty fast enough
the iphone 4 well worth considering, it is pricey for a Sony Ericsson K850i touch screen though, 3gs not worth considiering against the other 3, just my 2 penneth worth.

If you dont mind paying a lot for the phone and and a lot for the tarrif then you'll probably be happy with an iphone

If however you want the best handset from the choices you listed on a discounted contract then you'll want the desire, its an amazing phone and the fact you can pick it up free on discounted contracts makes it a no brainer really, you just need to shop around for the best deal.

3GS is still a good phone and if you have had an iPod Touch and have loads of apps it is very good value. I had an option of an iPhone 4 with Three but decided that the 3GS was better value for me as I wouldn't have used the extra functionality offered by the iPhone 4. Swings and roundabouts and all that.

I knew someone who went from an iPhone to a Desire and has now put his SIM back into his 3GS. He is a heavy apps user and was disappointed by the quality of the Google Marketplace apps. Apple pre vet all apps on itunes so they run more seamlessly. This is what put me off the Wildfire.

I had a 3GS 16gb running ios4 and was very happy with it.

But i have still sold it and purchased an iPhone 4 cause i wanted the lastest model.

And i would say that the iPhone 4 is a great phone.

I have only had a play with the desire (and also a Nexus one).

So i can only really commit on the displays when comparing them from my own use but before i had got my iPhone 4 i would say the screens on the Desire and Nexus one were alot better than the iPhone (3GS). But the screen on the iPhone 4 is amazing. And is so much more clear than Desire.

There are loads of pro's and con for all the handsets.

But i would drop the 3GS and the wildfire from the choice. (as you would probably think if only i had got an iPhone 4 / Desire if you got the other one)

So it would then come down to Desire and iPhone 4. And there is a massive difference is cost.
