 What a rip off. I will never pay for this again. I use this a lot for my ebay sales.

However, i had something delivered today that had been sent "signed for". Funny as i've come home from work and its sitting outside my front door for everyone who lives in my block of flats to nick!!!!!!

Just spent 10 minutes listening to hold music on the phone to then be told sorry theres noone here to take your call. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • my postman has signed recorded deliveries twice for me and left a note saying it was to save me going all the way to the main post office.....surely that's grounds for instant dismissal? Why risk it?

Simply call the people who sent you the item and tell them that you have not recieved said item, when they go to royal mail to complain royal mail wont be able to show proof odf delivery and will have to pay compensation to the sender and you will get another item

I know a lot of "signed for" deliveries are not actually signed for. Usually because the posty can't be bothered (for one reason or another).

It can be seen as an offence under Postal regulations and laws (my flatmate is a postie and he tells me a few stories, but I am not sure on the law on this one).

It is a nuisance, as I posted a letter which was time critical in that I needed to know when the letter was received. Trouble is, the letter was delivered, but the tracking system with Royal Mail was not used. This has happened to me 4 times out of six. I could not bring about my claim because I did not have proof of delivery.

A pity, but not one to dwell on.

inform your local sorting office of the fact that you were not asked not asked to sign. the posty will get a talking to.
Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!

My Postie signs for all my recorded delivery as Im usually at work and I am very grateful to him. Saves me a trip to the sorting office and he has nothing to gain

The idea of recorded post is that YOU SIGN to prove you have recieved the item, what good is RECORDED delivery if your postman signs for it.

What happens if your waiting for something to come, it shows up as signed for but you've not got it?

Postmen that do this should be sacked.

I'm currently corresponding with Royal Mail on this very subject and that a large percentage of RD items are never signed for. They have admitted in writing that most RD letters sent to businesses will not be individually signed for. They have also admitted that the Track and Trace service on the web causes them more trouble than anything else as it is not regularly updated.

My findings and their admissions have been passed to BBC's WATCHDOG.
  • I had 2 recorded delivery packets delivered to me last week by the postman who said "you don't need to sign for it cos i can't be bothered to get the form out of the bag!"

Signed for is a more or less pointless service - given it is there to protect the sender rather than the receiver I would imagine that most receivers are fairly happy that a postman doesnt insist on the signature because of the hassle of going down the RM office to collect it.

Special Delivery is different. What you are really paying for is the insurance on the item and ensured next day/ before 9am (or what ever you choose) delivery of the item. The actual signature part of the process is more to do with the administration of the insurance for claims that parcels didnt turn up etc than really one of the benefits of the service.

The idea of recorded delivery is that "someone" signs for it if I am happy that my postman is that "someone" where is the problem? If something I havent had shows up as signed for, it wont be my signature unless I signed for it. Postman is happy to sign for stuff he puts through my letter box because old fashioned tho it might seem in this cynical world, I trust him not to nick stuff and he trusts me not to say stuff hasnt arrived, no Im not married to him lol

The problem is that I also have items delivered that are recorded delivery that are left on the doorstep. 'Recorded' and 'Special Delivery' are meant to be a more secure method so that Person A knows that person B has received the items they have sent. If things get left on my doorstep and someone takes them then I havn't got them and the people who sent it say that they dont beleive me because someone has signed for it at the address it was sent to.

At £4 for a LETTER to be sent special delivery, what are we paying for if it just gets signed for by a postman and left on a doorstep?

True, you could complain and say "I never received it, thats not MY signature" - thats true, however as it was signed for by someone at your address as thats where the parcel was.... how do they know that isnt your friend, relation, or whoever? I can't see an average ebay user sending a new something out to you if they have a signature for the parcel regardless of whos signature it is.
