The three year rule is one used by commercial growers who have polytunnels and micromanaged feeding. The gardener can move that goalpost a year or 2 back, we will probably get maximum yields in year 3, with a sharp decline in years 5 and 6, though you only really need to remove them after they cease fruiting in abundence.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).
