Virgin Mobile false charges for internet

Just to let everyone know. Virgin Mobile have charged me for internet usage on my last three bills when I am not connected to the internet on my phone. The amounts are almost always the same, around 10 UKP. I contacted them via their online form two weeks ago but no-one replied, I tried contacting them twice by phone but got left holding the first time and cut off the second time.

This happened to me around two years ago and they were pretty good, refunded me the amounts and asked for details of my phone to find out what happened. If its happening again two years later it must be an ongoing problem with customers being charged for internet usage they're not using so check your bills. I do not have 3g and Edge is disabled on this phone, it only has wifi.

Sounds like something is updating (or checking for updates), but without you saying what phone you have, it is a total stab in the dark.

Not having 3G and disabling Edge doesn't mean that your phone can't connect to the Internet.
  • Uh? How is that? I have an iPhone 2G unlocked. How can it connect to the internet over the air if Edge is disabled? Edge is the only means of chargeable internet connection on this phone and it is permanently disabled. Further, when Virgin looked at this two years ago they agreed that I had been charged when I had not used data transmission so what has changed?
  • Something has to be going wrong there; Virgin charge 30p per day on most contracts for internet use. Their customer service is usually pretty good too and they should be able to tell you precisely when your phone is alleged to have connected to the internet. Give them another go.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

Does the original iPhone not fall back onto GPRS like any other phone would?

No it does not. Once you disable Edge using for example the process described at iphonenodata[dot]com as I have you will not be able to connect to the internet at all. Open Safari and you will get the no connection message as described on that site. It does not attempt to connect via GPRS as suggested.

I have no internet connection on this phone when WiFi is off. Actually Oscar thanks for the post, you reminded me that last time this happened I was charged more than 30p per day.
