I've just finished the first year of my law degree, I've done about 9ish weeks work experience from about year 10.

It has gradually got less boring but I really wouldn't choose it again whilst I was year 10. It will depend what solicitors you go to.

  • If you let the school arrange it, ask the person who went to that company last year for their feedback. I did this and saved myself 2 weeks of cleaning computers...

My work experience was pretty cool. I was supposed to spend time in all the departments of an Apple computer shop, (sold and fixed apples (before the macs btw).)

I ended up staying in the repair dept. 3 people and hundreds of repairs to be done. It was good fun, except for the day the MD asked me to replace the tube on a monitor, and I ended up breaking the glass seal which keeps it in a vacuum. Fortunately it didn't implode or cause any major damage.

On the opposite side of the coin, I've had few work experience kids work for me over the years. It's really tough, finding enough work for them to do, and keep them occupied. If you had loads of time to show you every part of the department there's a fair chance you'll be on the redundancy list soon. Plus there is the issue of access and security.

Be prepared to get lots of glass hammers, long weights, sky hooks and left handed screw drivers. Enjoy it for what it is... a chance to get some idea of what life will be like after school. It's very different...

You also forgot bubbles for spirit levels.

Best one i heard of is my little bro did his experience in a local music shop. Two doors up there a moped shop. The block in the moped shop sent his work experience lad down to ask if they had tuned his harmonica yet.

I had a really good experience working in a pharmacy very enjoyable, many moons ago.

Errr my little sis did her work placement at mum work work, she an housing officer with riverside.

There placement scheme sounds really good they send time which each part of the team. Ie one with housing officer, one with repairs team ect. I think she enjoyed that.

We've had some in my place of work(supermarket) I feel sorry for the poor !!!!!!s.

Yeah I used to work at a supermarket too. Stack some toilet rolls, someone will show you how to do it. Sorry you're not old enough to use a blade, you will have to ask a member of staff to open each box for you:p

I did work experience in year 10 at a local solicitors and had a great time going to court, sitting in clients interviews, reviewing evidence, going into the cells at the court, going to the police station, talking to the court journalists. Friends having work ex at another firm spent their whole week photocopying so tell the firm what you want to get out of it and check they won't take advantage of you.

I also did work ex at a theatre working with the stage crew which was awesome. Saw loads of shows in the night and met the cast after too. For this placement over 100 people applied but the theatre said I wrote the most interesting letter.

So advice - either phone and say you're really interested, or write a good letter outlining why you want the experience, or use family contacts to get where you want to!
