Am thinking of moving to West Sussex and have researched on the area, but just wondering if any of you have any personal opinions of which bits of West Sussex are good or bad.

Any help appreciated.

The chips from the "Cod Almighty" chip shop in Lower Rainton are rather scabby, but the lemon battered sole is delightful. However it is the opposite case at "Dulhai's Fish Bar" in Temple Sowersby, whos chips are made from only the finest locally sourced potatos and are always finely placed on the knife edge between too stiff and too soggy. I tend to get my fish from "Cod Almighty" and travel the extra 3.7 miles into bandit country to get the chips from "Dulhai's". A tedious but minor arrangment to guarantee the best Fish and Chip combination in the next twelve counties i assure you.

Keep it in mind when select a house, top tip!!

Either specific or general opinions on the areas would be great, in particular, relating to crime, schools, sports centres etc.

    Thanks.

I would avoid all three if I could...

I am offended, i was both specific AND general. And anyone who puts crime, school and sports prioritarialy ahead of good quality fish and chips is quite obviously the kind of person who would also rather slice the top of their soft boiled egg rather than delicately bash it with a spoon. Your not in France now Boris.

Only giving you a ribbing dear boy, forgive me for making you the butt of my lateral abroxionoties. I have yet to hear anything bad about the kingdom of Wessex. Similarly though, i've yet to hear anything good.

May 10,000 horses p!ss on your enemies chips.

Hastings is full of chavs (my mate lives there, he isn't one but there are many) and teen mums....Quite a grotty area.

Pretty much avoid Littlehampton although Rustington isn't too bad. The smaller tows and villages surrounding are quite nice eg Angmering but Angmering High School has a poor reputation. Ferring is quite a pretty little place. Worthing isn't too bad for crime - has some good schools and a few badish ones. Avoid council type areas especially Durrington area. Good for commuting and easy access to sea and Downs. Lancing has its bad areas plus some really nice ones - schools a bit iffy. Lots of bungalows. Sompting classed as posher. Shoreham has some decent areas and really as above and like most places some poorer areas. Moving towards Hove/Brighton some of the places are not great after Shoreham. Further west Chichester has some lovely places and the prices to match. Henfield and surrounding classed as very nice. Can't comment on schools/crime. Midhurst seen as posh and I gather some good schools and low crime. I would say that Crawley has a poor reputation but towns/villages outside are far nicer. Horsham is nice but has it's chav side like all places. Best off using upmystreet or similar to check crime/schools.

Where you settle depends on whether you want to be on coast or inland and how much you want to spend. If you're spending over £500,000 you'll get a good pick of homes in good areas pretty much wherever you choose. If you only have £180,000 then that will limit what you get and where.

If you have an idea of places along the coast or Horsham area I can comment - anywhere else I can ask colleagues or other people replying will be better off commenting.

First tip is ignore some of the stupid answers you might get on here for some reason!

I don't know much about West Sussex although I do work there. It seems to be a big county and varied. Crawley seems to be more in line with what you might expect with London overspill but I am sure there are some lovely areas. Isn't Arundel in West Sussex?

I hope you get some sensible answers from someone who knows the area better than I do.

Hastings is in East, not West, Sussex.

Many thanks elfen, notisis, whitesatin, Oldernotwiser and PasturesNew, in particular to notisis for the detailed post, it's all much appreciated.

Really seem to keep coming up with Horsham and Worthing. Anyone have any personal experience of either of these at all ? Or perhaps any other areas in
    West Sussex ?

Would have about 180,000 to spend on a property, but am willing to have a not-so-good property in a good area, rather than have a good property in a not-so-good area.

Schools, we're a young family, so if there's any info on good primary schools, that would be great.

Crime, looking to find somewhere where the crime rate is lower than most other areas, if possible.

Sports centres - quite sports orientated, so would love any info on sports centres in West Sussex, and in particular Horsham and Worthing.

    Any help appreciated.

    Chris
