    hmmm

    how?

Much better than game, in service and price
  • I agree with Majik, mod the box and run XBMC (pimped edition is best) if you have the techie know how, or get someone to do it for you. Theres plenty of info on how to do it on the net, but you'll need to get a router to connect both your PC and Xbox to the net, this has the added bonus of networking the pair and like Majik said you can then watch and listen to nusic stored on your PC. http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/

Another thing is http://www.xbconnect.com/ which is a free alternative to XBox Live, all multiplayer games can be played across this opposed to Live enabled games only.

As far as crystal or black goes theres no difference apart from colour, save the money and put it towards Xecuter to allow you to run XBox Media Centre (XMBC)

To use XBMC u need to hack the xbox.. yes it adds a huge amount of functionality to the xbox.. but there is abt of work to do to get it going.

Less than 10mins of work to get media centre up and running.

Don't pay for overpriced chips, a softmod has every feature a chip does and costs nothing.

There are slight differences between the Crystal and the Black (depending on which revision you get).

You really don't need to be a techie at all with the autoinstallers that are available (doing it manually is far better though, and not hard at all).

XBMC + 300gig HD in the xbox with all your music on and you're sorted, our kid. :]

Xbox are also this price instore at Gamestation, (some stores still have them labelled up at £79.99 though). You''ll need to buy a RGB scart cable or Component cable yoo, as they only come with RCA cabels (like most other consoles).

If you go down the softmod route then avoid the SID installer unless you want a XBox doorstop. The best installer to use currently is Krayzies NDure 1.1. After you have done your softmod remember to backup your eeprom, bios etc etc to your pc.

Also avoid downloading such installers from torrent sites. Do a google for Xbins and follow the instructions.

I softmodded my Xbox several months ago and have XBMC running on it. I upgraded the HD as well so I can store music and video files on the Xbox.

It makes a very good media centre and you can still play your games on it as well.

I've read this a few times but other than using non-standard placements of the dashboard I don't see what the problem with it is.

One of my boxes is modded with this and it works as well as any of the other exploit installers

You should really back them up before doing the softmod (if using krazyie you can backup the eep (the only really important part) to a memory card too (if you don't have a pc)

It makes a very good media centre and you can still play your games on it as well.

I just find it very slow and unresponsive - but then again it is only running on 64mb of ram (unless you do the RAM upgrade) so it is amazing what it can do.

I am sure there are others out there like you who have had no problems. But I know of countless people who have had problems after using the SID mod. SID alone is responsible for countless people having to buy mod chips after bodged up SID installations turned their XBox into doorstops.

Krayzies NDure is the best softmod out there. It is simple to use and difficult to bodge up.

TBH I think most of the messups have been user idiocy (for whichever exploit installer is used).

SID4+ uses the ndure method now anyway so I can't see it being any worse than krazyie 1.1 (which I've used on one of my xboxes too, along with manually exploiting the other). I can see how when it used PBL it would've made things a lot messier (and they did stick to PBL for years after everyone else had moved away from it).

TBH, as long as you backup your eeprom the very second whichever exploit installer you are using has booted then you can fix any problem without much effort.

If you are stupid enough to not backup the eep, well you may be able to fix or you may need to buy extra hardware.

BTW: For anyone interested in softmodding Dixons still have the Xploder Gamesaves Lite for £0.97p, which you will need to get the files onto the memcard (or a friend with a already-modded xbox could do it for you). Saves building your own USB>memcard adapter.

Do you still need an explotiable game eg 007 or MachAssult or have they found a way round it?

Was meaning to soft mod my xbox, havent got round to it but isnt it much easier to just remove the hard drive from the xbox and attach it to your pc and install the sid software (making sure to backing up the eep) and then simply replace the hard drive back into the xbox. The only trick is removing hard drive at a certain time when the xbox is started up ( this unlocks the hardrive).

Far easier to use a gamesave exploit.
