"Inclusive WiFi use of BT Openzone hotspots in the UK only. Fair Usage policy of 750MB applies . Usage above 750MB per month may result in suspension of Wifi services and/or suspension of your account"

You need an account to use free wifi - so they can then track and monitor your usage.

So the free wifi hotspots count towards your data usage, but using the iphone at home or at a friends on a private router doesn't. In that case it would count towards the data usage on either your or your friends internet usage.

I'm not - I stated that the free wifi at mcdonalds etc would count but using the wifi at home on your own router doesn't.

Either way, Orange clearly states that it only counts data in the UK as free with your contract. So anything abroad, as the OP asked would be chargeable, on an Orange account at least.

inclusive wifi,as in part of the contracts features and as such data allowance
so since my contract doesnt include using openzone, does that mean i have no access to it even if i pay seperatly, would orange then charge me for using openzone, cloud or the like??
    of course it doesnt
you are refering to contract data allowances
the OP is referring to joining wifi networks abroad

i use a little coffee shops wifi when im in town
they change the passwords daily and you get it when you buy a coffee
so will orange be tracking that?

"Mobile internet browsing is for use within the UK only. Any use outside the UK will be charged at the relevant international rates"

Your little coffee shop is like being at a friend's house - you get their password and hop onto their network.

But the OP asked about use abroad. It's not telling the full story to say "yes it's free" because unless the password is provided like your coffee shop, it will not be free, regardless of whether it's part of a contract bundle or btopenzone or any other similar free wifi.

so if the OP doesnt have roaming set up and tries to use wifi abroad?

I've been abroad a few times with my phone and usd internet.
I had to tell Orange once to allow me to use it abroad but now when I go abroad I just take my phone and use it.

Without getting the password to a wifi and then using it (eg like your coffee shop) the OP will be charged for internet on an orange account.

not sure about others but can't imagine them being too different.

Darich you are still totally confusing the matter. The BT WiFi thing is completely different from the 'free' WiFi available at hotels for example. You can connect your device to any unsecured WiFi and use it completely independently from any data allowance imposed by your network. This will be just like connecting any laptop to a free WiFi hub. Your network has nothing whatsoever to do with your handset when it is connected to a WiFi hub and all the data will be moved through whoever is operating the WiFi hub and not your mobile operator.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

If the WiFi point is charging then whoever operates it will charge you from your credit card but if it is free then there will be no charges at all (just like connecting to your home hub). Your mobile operater included some allowance for you to use on an a chargeable WiFi like BT openzone and that is simply it.

    I'm not confused at all.

I said - "The exceptions are at home where you log into your own (hopefully) secure network or at a family member's home where you log into their network."
I totally understand that connecting to a network at home or any unsecured network will incur no charges.......I've already stated that several times.
BUT the OP asked about data charges abroad.
As I've already stated, at least twice, Orange will charge for this regardless. The exception is if you hook onto an unsecured network as stated above. If you're lucky enough to find an unsecured network then you can use that free of charge although if it's unauthorised use it's classed as stealing.

EDIT : the iphone can be set to ask if you want it to connect to a wifi network - that would be advisable abroad. Then you can see if you're connected to a netowrk or using your 3g network.

  • Hey Darich and Aiadi,

I think you are saying the same thing. If you go overseas you are going to pay for expensive connections unless you do the following.

    1. Find a local coffee shop that will give you free Internet access for a cup of coffee.

    2. Most hotels are overpriced when using their wifi, but check one hotel had free wifi.

    3. Some countries have free wifi in town centres, it was a European initiative, when I was in Madeira I picked it up in the town centre and shopping centres. For some reason the money the UK received from this EU initiative did not result in us having free wifi in city centres.

    4. What I do is get a local sim card as a pay as you go when I get to destination with data bundle. Last time it cost be about £20 and was well worth it. If doing on an iPhone you need to activate with iTunes, but many stores will connect you, it just activates it and does not affect your music or videos on the iPhone.

But be careful two friends recently did not heed any if this advice and both ended up with bills of over £600. UK carriers are now meant to limit usage to £40 unless you ask for more.

    Hope that helps.

People should seriously think about the charges when using a phone abroad and be responsible for sending any texts, making phones calls and reading your emails

But you see even if you hook onto a secure WiFi hub then you will be paying its network (whatever network that WiFi point is using) and not your mobile's. When you are connected to WiFi no data goes through your mobile network whatsoever and there is no way your mobile network can detect that you are connected to a WiFi. Put it simply once you hook onto a WiFi point (whethere secure, unsecure, free or chargeable) it is between you and that point and has nothing to do with your mobile phone network or operator. As the others have said, WiFi (of all kinds and shapes) is completely independent from your mobile network).

Therefore if the OP connects to a charging WiFi then they'll incur the charges set by that WiFi point (in an airport or hotel for example) that has nothing to do with their mobile network.
