The other key piece for securing your PC not mentioned so far is making sure autoupdate is on for security patches as and when Microsoft publish the latest security vulnerabilities identified and fix them (which typically the virus writers are exploiting a few days afterwards

I run my netbook with that setup, if you avoid IE and use some common sense about downloading/running random programs from the internet, you can pretty much dispense with regular anti-virus/anti-spyware protection. Unfortunately, most people don't have common sense, the sort of people who click on ad banners saying "YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED, CLICK HERE FOR A FREE SCAN!!!111"poppy100 -
