Exchange Rate Cheats - Ryanair

  • I was flyting from Milan (Bergamo) to Faro, Algarve, hence the Euro transaction. However, I am confident the route has nothing to do with the problem. Its purely administrative (or just plain greedy!)

If you don't like them, don't fly with them - more bargains for me.

    Dear all,

for a flight from Altenburg (Germany) to London Standsted and back I paid with a German credit card for 2 friends. They went shopping during their stay, so for the return flight from London I added 2 checked bags for them. The Ryanair page showed the prices in Euro: 20.00 for each bag. I put in my UK credit card details, and the sum in the end showed 40 Euro. I clicked "purchased now" and suddenly they showed they charged the UK credit card with 62 STERLING.
The exchange rate given was 1.55675.
I basically paid, if you take one of the currend exchange rates on the internet, DOUBLE the price (40 Euro is about 33 Pounds at the moment).
This is unbelievable!!! What can I do now?
I thought about ringing Ryanair Hotline first thing tomorrow (they are closed now) and cancel the extra bags only to re-book with my German credit card right after. Does anyone know if this works? Or I thought about reporting my credit card as stolen at the bank right now to prevent the payment to go through. Any other tips? Please help!

Maybe I should add to my former post that I'm looking for solutions of what to do after I have been misguided by the ryanair webpage. It is still before the flight and I'd like to cancel the horrendously expensive credit card payment.

but surely as in the first post something is clearly wrong the exchange rate quoted here is Euro to Pounds which has been fairly steady lately at around 0.83 so 1.5 something is again almost double close to a 90 to 100% load. I think something must be going wrong in Ryanair's systems somewhere (maybe bad exchange software or something), given that this is so blatantly wrong I would be astonished if there was nothing that could be done about this.

I think the advice has to be, contact your bank / credit card issuer and dispute the charge.

Bla, once you had seen the sterling amount did you have any opportunity not to proceed with the transaction? If not, then I think you could legitimately dispute the transaction on the grounds of fraud (with your card issuer). You agreed to a payment of 40 Euro, NOT to the amount that was actually charged.

Exactly my thoughts - if you agreed to a debit of €40 and they take anything else (i.e. significantly more), that constitutes fraud in my book.
Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!

Normally with rip off ryan air posts, your post may have been apt, but in this instance you surely dont agree to a 100% loading on exchange rate...do you?

I would like to see the full breakdown of costs! If this exchange rate is as quoted obviously something is wrong in this case.

I pay with a pre-paid card in Euro's, but since I never pay more than a tenner in would make very little difference anyway.

Don't get mad - find a way around it, but any flight for a tenner or less is still a bargain.
