dyslexia can be mild, or it can be quite bad my reading and writing age come out at age 10 maths was 12 iam 24 now my lovely late granda could only write his name and signiture , i cant see my own mistakes its part of that if MSE had a spell checker i would use it and i had to often do what your daugther did with printing out a copy of what was wrote but i have to hand write it 1st then re edit as i type then still have to re draft that i get 25% extra time so i can slow down and plan things properly thats a big difference in english for gcse i would often acheve A's for coursework but that was because i had time to plan it well
Is it possible to write your posts in notepad or another programme that has a spell check then copy and paste into your posts here? That would get round the problem of MSE not having a spell checker. Think that is what I would do.0 -
well i have a grade c for english thats good enough for uni and that was before i found out about my dyslexia but spelling and grammar is disregard for all exams because of my dyslexia
I mean when you had to have an A level pass, a grade c in GCSE today is very low standardBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -
Ah but they are.
Th university that I'm currently attending, I had to have a level 2 English Qualification to gain entry on to the BSc Hons Social Studies Degree.
again this is a very low standard, it used to be an A level pass, one can achieve a level two pass by taking a multiple choice test nowadaysBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -
I find all this disregarding of things very scary indeed. Soon we shall have doctors and solicitors who are ungrammatical and covered in tattoos. Imagine getting to the operating room doors, and seeing the surgeon covered in tattoos and saying to you "did you get one of THEM pre-meds luv, don't worry it's okay, I have WENT to uni"Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

In todays 'everyone can go to University' you have to lower the entry requirements, otherwise it would still only be the clever ones who get to go. Plus you have to disguise how much education standards have dropped.
I can remember my teachers thinking i was a failure because I only achieved 7 passes at 'O' level, even though they included, English, lit and lang, French, Latin(!)Maths, biology.
Certainly the papers I had sight of when my children took their GCSE exams were really simple. Plus not all taken under exam conditions but coursework, done at home with as much help as could be found, counting towards the final mark.0 -

Exactly my point, and many of the uni students can't use a computer to a high enough standard either.Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0 -

Any coursework I've done (For GCSE & Access course - apart from research) had to be done in the classroom.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

That isn't the norm for GCSE coursework. You can do it at home as well as presenting various drafts until it reaches the required standard.
Decent schools often won't allow someone to take A level unless they have a grade B at GCSE and many universities also require this for English Language.0 -

I think people use dyslexia as an excuse for laziness tbh.
I have it too and wouldn't use it as an excuse to post something unreadable!
In fact, that is why I use lots of new lines - because I know I can ramble and forget to punctuate!
But anyway, as far as I am aware, poor spelling and grammar are not disregarded as such.
Sensitive marking means the reader should try and pick out the gist and be sensitive when they highlight errors, but it should not give the student an advantage. That's how I read it anyway!
There is no excuse for poor grammar and spelling when help is available via DSA imo.
I can understand it more in exams but not normal coursework - it's just laziness.
There is two type if dyslexic student in my experience - those who work hard to overcome their difficulties and rarely hand in poor work, and those who use it as an excuse for everything and as justification for handing in messy work!
Just my opinion of course!0
