  • We have an allotment so don't get a veg box (my kohl rabi didn't grow this year) but we do get a fruit box from Low Leases farm, this week it had oranges, apples, pears, plums, grapes, kiwi fruit and a grapefruit, all for £13.

Our supplier will substitute if requested, but in practice I seldom ask. For me, discovering delicious, new vegetables is one of the great benefits of these boxes.

Kohlrabi is a cabbage with a very swollen stem. One of the nicest and easiest ways to bring out the flavour is simply to slice and roast in the oven with olive oil.
People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.
  • Great to see discussions like this on veg boxes. We have built a non commercial website aimed at people letting others in their community know about the box schemes they use. Its a peoples site so we need your help to recommend your schemes and tell others looking for them why they are so good. So many people want to find a local scheme but struggle, this is to help them and the scheme too.

The site is www.vegboxschemes.co.uk and is free for all to use.

    Thanks

Thanks! I'll try it out. Make a change from Kohl Rabi coleslaw!

I do love the fab new vegetables we get, but one of the most difficult things is 'de-programming' yourself from the year around veg choice that supermarkets offer us to something more 'seasonal'. So obviously we get a glut of certain things at certain times of the year, currently it's beetroot - which fortunately we love, but with just two of us 16 beetroot in three weeks (big !!!!!!s) means we share the crop with friends!

Everyone has a friend who likes a challenge, so give them your spare Kohl Rabi today!
  • We have a box from Sunnyfields Organic Farm Shop and I order what I want each week using their on-line ordering system/catalogue. I live in Southampton, and Sunnyfields' farm is just a few miles down the road in Totton/Marchwood, so not only do I get great organic food, but I'm pleased to say that most of it is grown locally, so it's very fresh, and very low in food miles.

My current favourite is corn on the cob, which has been in season for a couple of weeks now, and their french beans and runner beans are delicious, as well as a huge variety of squashes, all grown locally, all in season, and all organic.

    Highly recommnded.
  • My veg box is due today and according to website it will contain:
Potatoes, Carrots, Sweet Corn, Cauliflower, Fennel, Onions, Broccoli, Batavia Lettuce.
It is £8.25 for the essential veg box but there are many other combinations with fruit etc and larger boxes. There is also an extras list if you want to get some extra items.
I really look forward to it arriving and it has cut my supermarket shop down loads as i use it to plan meals rather than doing it there and then in the shop!!!

This week I made an error and ordered too much - I now have a medium veg box, a mini fruit bag and a mediteranean veg box. I am also going away for a long weekend so this morning I am frantically blanching and freezing aubergines, green peppers, courgettes, onions, carrots, plums etc making a vegetarian lasagne, the chicken and leek pie will be made for tea tonight, banana bread will be made tomorrow morning (for the journey! mmm) I have to chop all the corns off the cob for freezing. My kitchen worktop looks like the harvest festival at the moment! lol

We have recently signed up for home delivary of organic veges. It is the same price (or less) than the supermarket.

The quality is amazing and you should really try it. We use Abel and Cole but I am sure there are others.
