What's in your Organic Veg and Fruit Box this week? (Merged)

Options
Thought it might be interesting to compare our Organic Delivery Contents:

I think we should say who the supplier is, how much it cost and what was included. It may seem that some are better value than others?

So I will start with:

I have a Mediteranean-Veg £7.50 and Mini-Fruit Bag £5.00, from Farmaround.
Mediteranean Veg Bag contained:
A huge bunch of green leaves on the stalk, looks bigger than kale/chard but have no idea what it is - it's too big for the fridge though and looks a bit ropey this morning!
Bag of white mushrooms
Bag of small plum tomatoes
3 x courgettes
2 x corn on the cob
Broccoli

Fruit Bag Contained:
3 x Golden Delicious (or similar)
2 x bananas
1 bag yummy plums
1 melon
1 tub of red grapes

So tell me what's in yours this week...

Do you weigh them yourself or do they come with weights written on them?

  • No I don't weigh them myself. We now get a little slip which has a newsletter on one side and the contents of the veg box on the other. Very useful especially when you get weird coloured & shaped vegetables!

Is this supposed to last us 1 week?
Or do you supplement with supermarket fruit and veg as well?

I use Abel and Cole and you can choose what you get if you prefer rather than get a prechosen bag. Obviously, some produce isn't available all year round and sopme is more expensive some times of the year than others but it is quite handy to know what you're getting if you have to plan ahead for children's meals and such like. I normally get a couple of lbs potatoes, lb carrots, punnet of cherry tomatoes, cucumber, butter, red pepper or 2, 2 pints of milk, 12 eggs, couple of lbs of apples, punnet of seasonal fruit eg raspberries, 4 yoghurts and it comes to around 20-25 quid. Mainly covers the week's fruit and veg though I do supplement a few items. Found them pretty good as a whole. Friendly and can change order online or over phone.

They are obviously small bags, designed for single people rather than a couple/family. For a family you'd get one of the large boxes (£15-£20 at the big commercial places, about £7-£9 from a small producer if you have any near you).

Mine doesn't last the week, I top up with carrots and spuds and the odd cauliflower from the Farmers Market on a Sunday and a few salad items (rocket etc) during the week as I need them. There are 3 in my household (but one is only a baby & doesn't eat solids yet).
I usually have one meal a week using store cupboard ingredients - pasta usually and a sauce made from tinned toms, garlic dried chilli flakes.
A roast at the weekend and the rest of the week is usually made up from the veggie box - so far have used a courgette, a few mushrooms, the broccoli and a couple of the tomatoes. Tonight we will be having the corn on the cob and another courgette, the mushrooms and tomatoes chopped up and stir fried together. Tomorrow night is pasta night.
Caught hubby eating an apple last night - which I have never seen before. He must have been hungry!!!

I order from River Nene. Even thought there's only 2 of us we eat a huge amount of fruit & veg (fresh juice & fruit on cereal for breakfast, salad every lunchtime) so I have a large veg box £13.50 & a fruit box £7.00 & I still buy extra fruit & salad stuff during the week.

    I got my delivery today & there's;
    new potatoes
    carrots
    onions
    cabbage
    cauli
    2 big leeks
    2 marrows
    3 green peppers
    lettuce
    mushrooms
    tomatoes
    sprouted seeds

    in the fruit box;
    a honeydew melon
    8 apples
    6 pears
    6 kiwi
    1/2 kilo of Victoria plums.

I think the veg box is very good value & I've had several things I've never tried before. The fruit box isn't quite so good but the quality is good so I stick with it.

why not upload a photo of your veg here, I'll do it when I get my next one in 2 weeks - compare sizes (oo-er missus) from different companies, be a good benchmark to see who is value for money then.

Looks as though someone has yet to post about the Organic Country Store, so here goes.

We have the family mixed box, which I supplement with organic carrots, calabrese and occasionally tomatoes or pears from my local supermarket and from our monthly Farmers' Market. We top up with non-organic seasonal fruit from our local greengrocer. This week's box contained:

    potatoes
    carrots
    swede
    onions
    spring onions
    cucumber
    tomatoes
    lettuce
    beetroot
    courgettes
    mushrooms
    green beans
    kale
    sweetcorn
    bananas
    oranges
    apples
    mango

It's all good quality and there's no waste. Most weeks, I order free range, organic eggs as well, because local supplies are intermittent. The firm has its own drivers and the empty cardboard boxes are collected to be re-used. My bill comes to £21 per week.
