A similar thing happened to me years ago. My father in law was in hospital and I was in his flat when the window cleaner called for his money. I paid him and told father in law who said he didn't have a window cleaner! I suppose this chap made a mistake and I paid him for windows that he hadn't cleaned.
In this case, though, I would definitely NOT pay him as it was his error and does not deserve to be paid.
  • Our window cleaner was booked to come once a fortnight - quite sufficient really.

We noticed he seemed to be coming regular for payment. One day he caught me 2 weeks on the run (he usually got me or my wife alternately). I said "I paid you last week". He said "Did I? I keep forgetting and cleaning them weekly". I said, "I'm not paying, I didn't request it" and he said "You will have to, I've done it now". I paid him, and told him not to bother in future, which he said fine.

I COULD have refused, but I honestly think I would have got home from work one day to find the windows covered in mud or broken. Wasn't worth the hastle for a few quid!

If you haven't asked for his services, definitely do not pay, and surely he will not be stupid enough to continue cleaning if he is not getting paid.

Make sure your house number's clear so he's no excuse for saying it looks like part of next door. And of course you shouldn't pay for something you didn't ask for. I'd tell him I didn't ask him or indeed give him permission to do my windows, and that if ever I need to have them done, if he'd like to give me his name and phone number I'll let him know.
  • Fool me once etc
  • No don`t pay the cleaner, if the window cleaner has done your windows previously & been told you didn`t ask for them to be cleaned , then he seems to be stupid by continuing to clean them.

I wouldnt pay for something I hadnt asked for, wouldnt have paid the first time, the second time or any time after that, you would have thought the window cleaner would have stopped by now and would know that hes not getting any money. For now though...just enjoy the free service
  • No Pay,just mention Tax man to him, or to come back when there is a man in the house.

On my street a few houses have the letter "A" after the number. I don't get my windows cleaned but my neighbour does and I often come home to find a note saying mine have been done. When the window cleaner comes to collect his fee he gets annoyed if I won't pay him - yet I've never asked him to clean the windows. Should I start paying or keep refusing?

This is not a money moral dilemma as the law is involved.
    Simple answer is No.
If he continues to ask for money point out he breaking the law, as he providing an "unsolicited service" and as such under "The Unsolicited Goods and Services Act 1971" while it not an an offence for anyone to send unsolicited goods or provide a service, it is an offence if they demand payment or threaten legal action to get payment. Also under this act an goods you are sent by a company which you haven't ordered do so at there own risk since once you receive the goods you do not have to pay for them and they are yours to keep.
