You may not have noticed though - but the OP has not come back here with feedback or answers - his version of events could not have happened.Azrael_1701 wrote: »What you said was that you cannot do CHAPS via phone, which is incorrect, you mentioned nothing about amount.0 -
Cut off for Halifax is 1:30 and you can give chaps instructions over the phone. I'm not sure if there is a limit but it is definitely more than £150,000. However banks in general are still not quick enough to process them, they're not making things efficient enough for customers. Most banks have a cut off of 3pm, Halifax is 1:30. So next time your buying a house and need to send money via chaps, who you gonna call?0

Thanks for your responses. I am not a troll - do you really get people on these forums who make up boring stories about money transfers?
I haven't visited since I wrote the last post because I was really busy helping my sister and her family with her new house, then off on holiday.
The money did reach my sister on the day I wrote the post, but the selling solicitors messed up so she didn't get the keys that day anyway. Fortunately she didn't have to be out of her old house for a couple of weeks, so she wasn't homeless.
The reason I hadn't transferred the money earlier was because I had fairly short notice to gather the money from various savings accounts. In one case, I was expecting the money to be transferred to my current account, but instead they took several days to send me a cheque, which then had to clear.
So it is perfectly possible to make a chaps transfer of £150 000 by phone, though they will call you to do a security check. But if I pay £25 for the priviledge of transferring my money, it is pretty rubbish when they are not competent enough to do it, and I have to spend several hours on an 0845 number trying to sort it out. We were fortunate that everything turned out OK.
By the way, I have now got all the money back from my sister plus interest, and she and her family are very happy in their new home.0
