OP, I wonder if your specific motoring question would do better on the motoring board, would you like me to move it there?
The motoring board dosnt have a clue about disability related driving enquires and if anyone posted this thread there it would be turned around to abuse us.
As long as you play fair with Swansea, you will be ok but it does take a while sometimes and as long as you apply well before your licence runs out you should be ok as long as your medical team agree with you being fit to drive.0 -
It is worth phoning Swansea to find out if they are waiting to hear from anyone in particular, you can then contact whoever that is and politely ask if they have received the request and if they have are they planning to respond any time soon?
I had a very long wait post brain-surgery: DVLA sent one letter to my consultant as soon as I wrote to say I'd had surgery, which was a bit of a waste because of course I wasn't fit to drive at that point! However, they then wrote again, and the request for a report was ignored for a good long time. But DVLA told me this, so I could chase it.
However I then had the situation where the consultant's secretary could only tell me that the report had gone off, and there didn't seem to be anything in it which would indicate that I wasn't fit to drive but of course she couldn't say if I was or not. And DVLA could only say that they'd received the report, but the person answering the phone could only say that there didn't seem to be anything in it to indicate that I wasn't fit to drive, but of course HE couldn't say if I was or not. I either had to get someone medically qualified to tell me I WAS fit to drive, OR wait for DVLA medical panel to meet and agree that I was fit to drive, and then wait for them to write to me.
You begin to understand why it can take a few months ...
This won't be relevant for everyone, but having spoken to the consultant's secretary and to DVLA, I went to see my GP to see if he would tell me I was fit to drive. Which, having checked DVLA's website for advice about people with my kind of tumour and my kind of surgery, he agreed I was! But I had the advantage of clear cut definitions, and I'd obviously made a good recovery, and not all notifiable conditions are that straightforward.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
OTOH when I was registered blind I didn't tell them but simply stopped driving and didn't renew my licence when it ran out. Same effect surely?
I would say so, yes. I was thinking more about those who carry on driving after being diagnosed with a medical condition.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Hi everyone,
First time post in here so am sorry if it ins the wrong place, i wasnt sure where to put it
I'm 31 and have Multiple Sclerosis, and shortly after I was diagnosed over 3 years ago I had my driving license changed to a restricted 3 year medical one. I recently (April) sent off my renewal and have still heard nothing besides the initial confirmation of receipt. Is this normal? I'm starting to worry I wont be getting it back
I only drive when I feel 100% well enough and i'm not 'disabled enough' to qualify for DLA or blue badge so will this be taken into account?
Thanks for any help or past experience tales... xx
as far as DLA goes apply,,we never know when we will get worse,,its only a complicated form,,but spend time on it or gor to CAB and fill it in0 -
I've recently had to inform dvla about my MS, they called me a few weeks back to clarify a few things, then said they will now write to my consultant and then let me know of their decision.
My consultant didn't tell dvla, he said it was down to me to do so, and so not wanting to break the law i did, seems a bit of a slow process, and my consultant was happy for me to contiune driving if i felt i was capable, and i already have a motoability car, outlook as far as everyone is concerned is i should be fine, but it's not for them to make that decision,
I am worried that my license will be removed
i'm happy to go onto the three year one, i don't have any issues with that, but i'll be left housebound again if they do take it away, and made to rely on others, when all i want is to be is independant, people get bored of you asking for help all the time.0 -
Hi,
I also have a 3year restricted driving licence although not becasue of MS and my licence ran out 31st May 2010. I like you am also waiting for my new licence and a response from the DVLA. I contatced them about 3 weeks ago and got a very curt response saying there was no need to contact them, they were looking into my information and were very busy at the moment. If you ring the phone line they are not even taking calls at the moment.
So I think we just have to wait, no use really when you are worrying your driving licence might be taken from you, but I don't think there is anything we can do.
Hope this helps reasures you.
1st day0 -
I have to say that on that system, if you feel OK to drive, it must be better to be waiting to hear about renewal (because you can keep driving!) than waiting to hear about return (because you've had to give up for a time!)Signature removed for peace of mind0

48 yrs old also with MS here,,when does ur licience run out,I thought my renewal was going to be late,,i phoned up DVLA,,told me it was ok still to drive,,they were waiting on info from the docs etc,,if ur licience is due to run out,,give them a phone,,if it is not due to run out,,just wait it will probably arrive the day before ur old licience is due to expire

Hi there, my licence ran out last month... not driving at present as I'm just getting over a relapse and my legs are a little unsteady still but strange as it sounds its like my safety blanket knowing when I am well I can drive and just having that little plastic card makes me feel a little more 'normal' if there is such a thing
dla - i applied a few years back when i was first dx'd and was advised to claim and did so in a panic thinking i'd been handed a death sentence and my sight would never come back etc but then didnt get it so i've never tried since, i hate to make a fuss and know that it gets you nowhere but its just one more thing to stress about and i'm still living in hope that how I am now is as bad as I will get
Thank you all for your responses and help. They are very much appreciated
