Restricted driving license renewal??

Options
Hi everyone,

First time post in here so am sorry if it ins the wrong place, i wasnt sure where to put it :o

I'm 31 and have Multiple Sclerosis, and shortly after I was diagnosed over 3 years ago I had my driving license changed to a restricted 3 year medical one. I recently (April) sent off my renewal and have still heard nothing besides the initial confirmation of receipt. Is this normal? I'm starting to worry I wont be getting it back :(

I only drive when I feel 100% well enough and i'm not 'disabled enough' to qualify for DLA or blue badge so will this be taken into account?

Thanks for any help or past experience tales... xx

dla can be a pain in the bum to get but did you have help last time you applyed via ms socity or CAB really inportant as they know what to put down and how your affected and there terrible for turning down people that are genuine always appeal this is the cretria below and always put supportive everdance in

Disability Living Allowance is about having care needs and/or mobility needs and not about employability of the claimant. You don't need a diagnosis, only to be able to demonstrate that you need help looking after yourself or supervision to keep you safe or if you can't walk or find it very hard to walk, or you need help getting around.

    If you have care needs

To get the care component of Disability Living Allowance, your disability must be severe enough for you to either:
    • need help with things such as washing, dressing, eating, getting to and using the toilet, or communicating your needs
    • need supervision to avoid you putting yourself or others in substantial danger
    • need someone with you when you are on dialysis
    • be unable to prepare a cooked main meal for yourself (if you had the ingredients), if you are aged 16 or over
ESA is for those who cannot work because of their illness or disability. This is the one that is changing as older claims were made under Incapacity Benefit but now there is an assessment to see what the person is capable of in terms of types of employment or if they can't work at all.

theres also the mobilty aspect to look at as for the blue badge apply , gp can write a supporting letter and will decide if this will help you not

OP, I wonder if your specific motoring question would do better on the motoring board, would you like me to move it there?

I dont understand when you say 'you had your licence changed to a restricted one' - did you notify the DVLA or did someone else ?

This really has no relevance to the question asked by the OP!
Why do you insist on encouraging everyone to apply for disability benefits in every thread when it's not even the question they have posed!

Anyway back to the OP. DVLA Medical Services take a long time. I applied for a licence to try and get my bus pass easier (didnt work) and they took about 5 months, maybe more to make a decison. I phoned them frequently only to be told they were assessing my application.

They are not interested in if you get DLA or anything else. They only care about your fitness to drive on the road safely. To assess that they use info from you, your consultant, GP, their own doctors and the law. Benefits dont come into it.

GPs, Consultants and every individual has a legal responsibilty to inform the DVLA of any medical condition that can effect your ability to drive.

If you dont inform them you can be prosecuted.

    Hi OP
My hubby has a similar condition to yours and also has a 3 yr restriction on his driving licence, his licence was away for 5 mths, it took ages while they got Dr reports etc.
Why dont you give DVLA a ring, ask for the Drivers Medical group 0300 7906807 and see whats happening, they were really helpful.

I think its against the law not to tell them, insurance would have been void etc, I fully understand the need for the restriction as in 3 years from now my body could be in any state and not fit to drive but its very stressful just thinking I may not get it back when I am well because of a past relapse etc and not knowing what the dr's will tell them and how it will be taken. fingers crossed!

when i was diagnosed with epilepsy neither the consultant(s)or my gp informed the dvla that i was unfit to drive,in fact non of them even mentioned it to me,i took it upon myself to inform the dvla who then requested medical info from gp.

According to a load of papers I have from the eye infirmary, it's my responsibility to tell them that I have a medical condition that affects my ability to drive.

Yes it is and you can be fined for not telling them.
