I dont think this will be covered under the glass section of the insurance policy. Obviously not all insurance policies are the same but I just had a look at my old insurance policy and the new one (I have just renewed) and both policies specifically exclude fixed or movable glass roof panels from the glass cover section.

I've just looked at the three I have to hand, two just say windscreen & windows are covered, the third is like yours and specifically excludes sunroofs & roof panels.

What does the tesco policy say exactly?

If the Tesco policy doesn't specifically exclude I'd certainly argue they should pay particularly given the (presumably recorded) phone conversations you've had with them. Just had a look at tesco and they don't exclude sunroofs but there is a limit on the amount of claim which might make the discussion academic

Also, the tesco "value" insurance T&C says that you are not covered for incidents limited only to "accidental damage to windscreens, windows and sunroofs" thus including the roof in with the screen & windows.

Surely the implication here is that if you buy the "full fat" version then you are covered (up to the limit mentioned in your schedule)

Thanks for all the advice soo far, I am finally getting somewhere.
dug my heels in Tesco, they got in touch with the underwriters, who in turn looked into what was written at the time of me taking out this policy with Tesco. BINGO. Glass was covered at that time, and still is, just Tesco do not print it in the book they send out, this wording, they admitted, will have to change, so anyone else who has had Tesco deny them a payout on glass should double check and be persistent.
Have got Tesco to agree to authorise purchase of glass from another parts supplier much cheaper and much much quicker than Autoglass their preferred company. They will purchase from them, add handling fee and fitting bringing it up to £930ish + their VAT. Still need an engineers report though as with it being an expensive repair, they need to check it is viable against the value of the car. Phew, relieved. Engineer out to look on Monday.
Someone has offered to make a perspex panel, they will get it drilled for me, then will fit it as a temporary measure, of course, anyone can now steal it as it is not secure, and heaven forbid it rains through the night.
    Right next.
I am due too reinsure on 20th of this month, have never had a problem before so never queried how good a company is, you never know until you need them! Tesco are now putting this theough as a full claim, not windows, though in fact it is not a full claim, I must ignore the letter they send me, I only have to pay the £75 excess.
As it is a full claim, they are going to pursue the owner of the nursery through their legal team, and will decide wether or not there is enough to go on. I wish them very good luck in this as, hsd it been one of the children that attends the nursery driving by with an open window, they would be answering to more than just Tesco Insurance.
To any doubters, yes,, it was smashed by the debris thrown up by the strimmer, yes I do have fully comp insurance, full no claims and legal protection. Having had this happen to me, I was happy to be able to come on here for some really good advice, so once again a big Thankyou to all of you

A few people here making sarcastic comments about the power of this strimmer.I used one around 20 years ago that literally chopped stones in half with its metal blade and sent the shattered fragments flying all over the place.I even had to pick bits of them out of my legs as I made the mistake of using it in shorts. Not all strimmers are black and decker light use.

What sarcastic comments! Nobody has said they can't send stones flying and if you're parked right next to one in use then it can cause damage. What we're not buying is that a stone thrown into the air will have enough energy coming back down to smash a toughened glass sunroof, not unless it was damaged or cracked previously.

I don't get you. You say 'what were not buying' instead of 'what I'm not buying'!! erm, this is your opinion, and i did think that your previous post today made you into rather an expert on what either a stone, gravel, and a strimmer are capable of.
While i appriciate that you may not think this is possible, the police and now my insurance tend to agree with me.
The good thing is that i am now getting this sorted.

I hope this post may be found by someone else and be of help in the future, to anyone if they experience similar problems re glass or windscreen only cover, it certainly does pay to not give in to your insurance company, who are not really bothered one way or another. In my case persistence and a whole day on the phone paid off.

Oh, and to add, the reason I used Tesco in the first place rather than C.I.S who I always used previously is not because they were particularly cheap, but because they were the only one i could find who would insure a 'grey import'. this car is not to be found on the list they have, so they insure it as 'similar' in this case it is down on my policy as a Toyota previa, even more problems by them doing this, but all OK in the end.
  • glad its working out for you.

hope all goes well with the engineers report on monday.

I guess this is also a good example of the troubles you may experience when buying an imported vehicle. not saying it shouldn't be done, i very nearly bought a Toyota Granvia, but there are pitfalls.

How do you get on with the Police?, your vehicle is a Nissan Homy, but the insurance state Toyota Previa. Your insurance docs don't match-up to the real make/model.
