There are a couple of pics here of the scrapage mountain, what a stupid policy that was.

What was worst about the scrapage scheme was that it only got the "good" 10+ year cars off the road.

Unless you could afford to put down several thousand pounds (or got a loan) you weren't eligible.

So everyone who was looking after their cars and could afford to do so were able to upgrade to a new car rather than a 3-4 year old car.

The real old bangers that didn't get looked after because the owners didn't have the funds weren't able to be taken off the road because they couldn't afford the money or the debt to trade up to a new car!

The scrappage scheme ended-up being one big con. All the makers increased their prices by over £2k a week prior to the scheme starting-off.

At least if you have a pre-2001 car such as a Focus, Mondeo, Vextra etc., you have the option to drop a newer engine in when the old one expires, and if it is from a post-2001 car, you don't have to pay extra tax.

Hah I remember having thrown a piston in my old 1973 Escort and being able to repair it (my first car in 1984 cost £125 and LHD) not so easy now days.

Sure I would like a brand new car, but I don't half smile when I drive past a petrol station and see the prices.
I will make sure my next car will run for free again as well as I am now a convert to alternative fuels, no more fuel tax for me.

Dunno why you want a new car Jim.
    Love your disAstra. :)
Spotted a set of four pistons with rings brand new on ebay for the diesel engine. Going for £30. Not uncommon price. Full head gasket and seal set about £20. Not that I need them, but at 220K miles you start to think of these things :)

    Old motoring just rocks.
Through the MOT with mine. Thanks in part to the scrap yard:
    new springs all round,
two brand new front lower ball joints,
welded up exhaust and handbrake mount.
Rear driver arch needed a patch too.
Adjust rear brakes and flush the fluid through to firm the pedal up.
    Three new bulbs.
£50 for all parts and paint.
12 more months of veg oil cheapness :)

My other cars are 18, 20 and 27 years old and in far better condition than the astra, which looks like a dog but then that's partly the point.

It's the anti-status symbol. Taking pride of place in the car park being avoided by everyone just because it's old and a bit battered.
Yet constantly passes much newer things sitting on the hard shoulder, daily.

probably sitting on the hard shoulder, not because theres anything actually wrong with it but because a sensor, checking for something wrong, has failed! ;)

I have just started to look for a car for my g/f, her 10 y/o Ka probably won't pass its MOT this time round. The scrappage scheme has certainly had a massive effect on the amount of sub £1000 cars on the market.

Autotrader used to be full of used vehicles at the lower end of the market and now has very few.

The auctions look like the best place still but very few of these are over 10 years old. As long as it comes in under budget we'll have as new as we can get though.

    Wow, you're such a sweet bf indeed.:A

Anyway, instead of purchasing a brand new KA, why don't you modify every single part little by little which is cheaper. There are lots of online shops offering Ford Parts. I can recommend one if you're interested though.

Thanks :) Have a great day!
